Forehand grip, not the norm? Do I need to change??

I from the very start of my badminton career (5 years now) have always used a axe like grip. Looking directly down at my racket, the face is at 12 oclock.

My coach when i got coached year or 2 ago showed me proper forehand grip (racket head at slight angle 1pm) but I never kept up wit this. Im never actually aware of where my hand is exactly when I do this shot.

Currently I have no problem with control. One of my best shots in singles is the straight smash down the line when Im being pushed into either the forehand or esp the overhead corner :).

My power is decent, I dont have a massive smash but its decent. Since doing weights etc, my power has increased althou id love more lol.

The question am asking is do I need to change this current grip of mines to the "correct" grip? Would I see any benefit of working my butt of for 6 weeks to change this??

Thanks

Philip

Its not conventional but there are world class players with grips this "open".  The angle you are holding it in the fingers/palm is probably more fundamental , i.e. if the butt of the racket was extended would it hit your wrist or be visible sticking out bottom of hand?  You will probably find reverse slice and outwards shots on forehand come easier than normal slice.  Without seeing how good your shots are its hard to say whether a more textbook grip is worthwhile.  It would depend how grooved (difficult to change) your current grip is, whether the effort would be worthwhile or better sepnt elsewhere

I agree with Dip.

What you could do is a test where you focus on performing one overhead shot and experiment by testing the different grips. Which gives you the most consistent and solid outcome? I know you need to take into consideration the fact you are new at the standard grip but it's worth giving this a try over a period and see if results differ.
