Hi all, a lot of you on here know me, been to a few of pauls coaching weekends, been playin for 5/6 years giving it everything ive got to improve but I seemed to reach a place where I felt it was the end of my badminton career. I currently feel that I need proper coaching to improve but i aint got the time to do this :(

The past month or so Ive been playing badly esp in comps. Played in 3/4 comps and jus mishitting it, mistiming it, jus general rubbish like ive only played a few months. I sort of wondered, why I am doing this. Am being destroyed by people I know I can beat or atleast compete with!! I enjoy the game when I play the way i can, I have a lot of fun whether I win or lose.

So I took a break for couple weeks, only played if I was bored or had a match. Even went the odd night with the attitude of cant be bothered, wont try as this seems to be the attitude of some real good players I know and they seem to beat every1 in the league but that made me worse but I knew that was why so didnt bother me as much.

Had another comp coming up which was on last night. I have to admit, I was looking forward to it. Jus thought, I can win this, il give it 100% effort and enjoy it. I ended up winning the tournament!! The feeling was unreal. Its the 2nd time in 5/6 years ive won a badminton event.

It was just funny how maybe a week ago I was all for leaving the sport cause am "crap" at it and then last night, I won the tournament. Jus funny sport. I believe what helped me was the fact I took a break away and didnt force things. The fact I said to myself, I can win this and ive give my all to win it. And that was it.

Phil

Congratulations on your win.

I feel there are two different forces going on here. First of all, constant pushing to improve isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, I wonder whether you have decided on how to measure this kind of improvement.

Second, your mental preparation for the tournament seemed so much better and maybe that was the most significant factor. Your mind acts like a computer at times – so crap in…crap out. You tell yourself that you're not playing well and your mind will respond by doing what you tell it. So, be careful what you say to yourself because this is the cause of your results good or bad.
