Mature (52) newbie. Have played recreational badminton before (many years ago). Just returned to playing as a means to getting fitter and keeping the weight down!

My wife and I "play" around 3 to 4 times a week for about 90 minutes each time. Reading books and watching endless coaching videos we are trying to improve our playing – just for our enjoyment and to make sure that we get the most out of it. We may look to join a club as our ability increases. Looking forward to picking up a few tips and ideas on here. Have enjoyed reading Paul's articles on racquets etc. So, see you around on the forum.

Regards

John

Ps if you are wondering why my username is Roadrash….I am a keen motorcyclist and that is my username in other groups I belong to!!

Hi John,

I used to play a computer game called Roadrash back in the day, I seem to remember being able to hit fellow racers with baseball bats!

I would heartily recommend you join a club rather than waiting to get better first. Reason being that you will improve rapidly by playing a wide range of people in a club situation. Look for one that welcomes beginners and give it a go, the social side of playing is just as fun as the actual playing.

Roadrash, I remember that game, that was really good! Ah that takes me back to the good old days!

I would second everything Rob has just said, it's a bit like you might learn a lot at university, but you learn a hell of a lot more on work experience and stuff you wouldn't learn at university (if you get my point Confused). Oh, and work experience is more fun too! Wink

Joining a club would and should benifit you more than try to get better first. As long as you don't go to a club that's deadly serious as this might put you off joining a club, but you will find a club that you like so keep looking. Having fun is the most important part of badminton! Smile

I'm off now, to Google Roadrash and re-live my childhood! Laugh
