My name is Stu (the username probably gives that away) and I have been playing badminton for 12 years now. (although still relatively young at 21!)

I am in the strange postion of having been a participant at Paul's first residential coaching weekend in September 2010 and then came back on the March 2011 weekend as an assistant coach!

I enjoyed both experiences immensely and it was great to have an insight into both perspectives. Although i was not playing as many shots as a coach i felt just as tired as i did as a participant due to concentrating all day on trying to improve the technique of others. (sometimes feeding and trying to pick up on pontential errors at the same time, which is difficult for an unexperienced coach such as myself)

If any of you reading this have not had the pleasure of attending one of Paul's weekends yet i suggest you look to get yourself onto one in the near future as it was a truly positive experience. I consider myself a fairly advanced player having played at county level for 10 years and yet still felt i learnt many things to enhance my own game. If I had come down as an intermediate player the scope for learning would have been unbelievable for such a  relatively short space of time!

Paul and the other coaches Ian and Matt are absolutely fantastic and it was brilliant to work with them in the March course.

I look forward to reading and contributing to many interesting badminton topics on this forum.

Glad I made you work hard for it on Saturday morning Stu! Laugh

It was good to do the one on one session with you on Saturday morning and whilst it may have been boring stuck on one subject of movement to back and front of the court, it's amazing how difficult it is to train the brain to do this! I have been practising at home as I know that in order to be a good badminton player you need good foundations (much like building a house), so I'm hoping once I have sorted my footwork out and keeping my racket up I will then be the next big thing (better get a shift on if I'm 30 already! Laugh)

Welcome to the forum Stu, lots to be learned or disscussed here. In fact, you might help yourself as a player and coach, simply by posting on here as some times it helps to write these things down yourself or even get you to question things or work out how to explain something. At the end of the day, it's all good.

I have video footage of you trying your best to get me to understand how to get about the court without throttling me! WinkLaugh

Welcome aboard, with Matt already on here, it won't be long before there will be a coaches section! SurprisedLaugh

Welcome Stuart

For all readers, Stuart was a tremendous asset to the coaching team at Lilleshall. He had infinite patience and a clear understanding of the mechanics of stroke production.

Yes, it's incredibly tiring concentrating on players for the 12-13 hours we are on court. I was also very tired and I had a little bit more to do keeping the program on track and constantly looking over my shoulder at what was going on around me.

Both Stuart and Matt played a huge part in the success of the weekend. I for one am looking forward to welcoming Stuart and Matt back to Lilleshall next September. Ian has already confirmed he will be with us too so it'll be good to have the same coaching team again.

If we get enough interest I may have to consider a 5th coach to join us!

Welcome Stu!

Very glad to hear that I will be working with you, Ian and Paul again in september :) Like you and Paul said, it is very tiring even though we are making other people work hard! I think the one-on-one sessions Peter talked about are something really special about Pauls Residential Coaching Weekend. Its not often, in my experience, that players get one-on-one coaching for a whole morning on court!

notice the rally starting at 3.34… what shot did Boe use to kill the final shot? Look familiar to a certain recent coaching weekend? :)

I promise I didn't teach it to him!

What amazes me if you look closely is the height of the player's hands on service return. Don't they know anything?

Its funny now that we've covered it, that I notice the players do have their hands in strange places, and then as soon as they want to hit their shots, they have to change to what we were practicing, and THEN hit the shot. Seems like a waste to me… haha! :)
