Hi all,

I've recently started playing badminton having not played since school. Which if i remember rightly was about once or twice a term.

I started playing a couple of months ago and have now started playing 2/3 times a week at a local club. Where I am no longer losing all my games. Mostly play doubles or mixed.

I've recently had some coaching to help iron out my bad habits and have even gone as far as investing in some proper court shoes rather than my running trainers. Footwork does leave something to be desired though. I'm currently using a Carlton Racket, can't remember which, which I picked up in a local sports direct. I think it was about £30.

So my next thought was to have a look at upgrading my Racket. Is it worth it? If so do the £100+ racket really make there price tag feel worth it. Or considering my experience/ability (starting playing in lower divisions) Would something more resonably priced do the job just as well? I would be looking more towards a slightly head heavy racket as generally from borrowing other peoples these generally feel better.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum!

Quick answer to your question is 'no'. Obviously I'm making a massive assumption about your standard of play, but a decent club player would notice a good improvement from a racket at say £50. I can't see a player of that standard benefiting greatly from paying twice that though.

Having said that I notice you mentioned being able to try other peoples rackets, that's the best way to go. If you find one that you like the feel of and works for you, go for it.

Given that you're still improving rapidly, not spending a great deal may be a good idea too, as you you can just get something else in a few months rather than feeling stuck with a £100+ racket you don't really like.

A racket won't make you a better player, things like coaching your footwork will.

Hi Paul Welcome to the forum.

No doubt you'll find a wealth of badminton knowledge here so feel free to ask your questions. Rob has already provided you with an excellent answer. For now your racquet is fine. Test others at your leisure but invest in coaching because that's where the best and long-lasting returns on your money are found.

Good luck and I hope to see you around the forum.

Thanks for the swift and honest responses.

I've had a few coaching sessions over the last few weeks and it has made an instant impact on my game. Drops are better, smashes more consistant, net play is actually now working. So this is something that I deffinately plan to continue. Hopefully it will allow my feet to keep up with the rest of my game. Feel slightly like they get glued to the floor sometimes.

As for the rackets… After playing on tuesday with a huge (more than 1) array of 5 different rackets. (including my own) I have to say I did enjoy using the slightly head heavy Rackets, I played a few games with a Voltric 5, and some other games with my gf's Dads Carlton rackets. Although as you have both correctly assumed they were in no way game changers. So for now I shall continue using my current one and play some more games with the Yonex – which was the one I prefered from the few I tried.

Thanks

Paul
