This question is mainly for Paul but any1 else who has had similar probs or has any ans, please help.

Im fit ish for badminton. Did lot of fitness over summer and got to decent level althou not done asmuch past while, just play badminton 2/3 times a week.

I can play league matches and practice all fine with no issues what so ever. I have a prob at times in comps, more so when its a final. Not every time but I get very heavy quads like ive weights in my legs!! this slows me down and I feel like I cant move

I was in a final last nit and in the warm up before it, I took 3 shots and told my partner to stop as my legs were done! When we played I moved bit better but still not great.

The funny thing is which i know its a mental issue is I had to play intense mens doubles match right after my final. I literally had 2 mins break and I moved better and my legs felt loads better in this match than i did in the final. My legs were tired of course but not that same heavy weights in there.

How to I sort this? A friend of mines suggest to leave the hall and do shadow footwork before the final or before actual play to get the legs going and in a different environment. Please help!!!!

Maybe you're thinking too much about this issue, thus making things worse because you're not relaxed? Try distracting yourself by watching other matches going on around, listening to music or whatever helps really.

Another thing to consider is doing warm-ups and warm-downs before, respectively after, every single match. This will assure that you're legs are ready for the match.

One thing that you have to pay attention to is eating the right things, I've recently suffered from heavy cramps due to lack of minerals during a final which cost me the match and therefore also the tournament. Drinking a lot is very important and will help in keeping your legs fit. Although that doesn't seem to be the main problem here, seeing as you could play a match right after that final.

Hi Phil, Just wondering how were your legs when you finished the semi-final? When did you first notice your legs felt heavy, what was you thinking about? Just wondering if skipping just before you went on would help distract you plus help with faster foot work. What was you feeling like when it came round to the doubles match? what was different? I think it was nerves, nervous energy plus added pressure of being a final. Will be interested in Paul's answer.

To give you guys a brief update, I have spoken to Phil about this and am confident he won't suffer from this any more.

Phil is playing a tournament this week and I expect to hear good news from him, confirming the heavy-legs scenario is a thing of the past.

When Phil is ready he may let you know what happened when we had a phone call this evening, however that's for him. Dobbie, you already know some of these tools as I told you all about them at Lilleshall. By the way, I may release that talk I gave you all on to the website, if you think it will be useful.

I did set out a few others things for Phil because I consider he had created a self-fulfilling prophecy from his thinking which is now a thing of the past. As I said, I'll let Phil tell the story if he wishes. It would be nice to hear what happened from his side before i tell my side of the story.

Hey guys. Yea I got it throughout the whole comp but it got worse as the matches went on. I was well prepared for the match al day, had lot of carbs etc 2/3 hrs before and at lunch time. Felt good in general but when got on court, the legs werent right and  had rested 2/3 days before event to make sure I was fully fresh!!

Def a mental issue which I spoke with Paul last nit. Now the time for me is tomoro nit. I am the favourite in the minor B mens and singles tournament in the coleraine and district league. Paul has helped my change my attitude to comps. I will post on wed after i play to update how it all went.

Cant wait 🙂

Hey guys. To let u know I won the mens doubles and playin final of singles on fri.

To ans the question of heavy legs. That wasnt an issue. Before I played my legs hadnt fully recovered from the last comp, felt bit tight and tired. I did good warm up and stretches etc. It was weird in which my legs felt bit tired during the warm ups but not heavy as I had felt before but as soon as the shuttle got knocked up for a game, the legs felt fresh and I could move as fast as I wished. My legs didnt feel heavy at all. Even when I was a bit nervy, they felt fine.  In the final when this used to affect me the most, I was fine!! 🙂

But this is all thanks to Pauls help and advice which I wont share. Il leave this up to Paul when hes ready

Looking forward to friday nit when I play and WIN my singles final and I play and win the minor B mixed!! Good times

Many thanks for sharing Phil

Phil was being modest as he's also in the mixed doubles final too.

What I did with Phil after some basic questions and answers was to clarify what happened at tournaments. It was clear that Phil hadn't always suffered from heavy legs so this was obviously a learned behaviour.

I then introduced Phil to two very important players in his head whom I talked about at my last residential course. I also did a little reversing of timelines looking at a time when he had overcome heavy legs. We got to a place where he was feeling good and his legs were feeling light and then I took him back in time from this place so that he could see how rediculous he looked and felt because of the things he had said to himself and created through this behaviour.

In essence Phil had created a belief that he had to conserve energy in the early rounds. His brain complied and made his legs heavy to conserve energy. Sadly, this meant he spent more time on court so it wasn't working. After that it was easy to remove because only good movement, creating an easy win is the way to conserve energy.

Job done…next!

Wel guys il give you an update. I played the singles final first match of the night. Legs were feeling 100%. So great and free. Felt as light as feather. I dont know what happened but I got destroyed in my singles. Jus cudnt get going for whatever reason. Wrong shots and bad shots. But legs and fitness were all great.

Next was the mixed comp. Got to the final in this. Legs were tired in 1st game of final and we were 9 – 1 down at the start. I really had to use Pauls technique to get them going and get me going which worked a treat!! :D. After a few points I was jump smashing everything at back of court, if anything doing it too often in which I made a few errors so I had to calm down a bit. We won 1st game 21 – 18 i think. The legs were now in good form and we destroyed them in the 2nd game 21 – 6!!

So def well happy with my results this year. Best year in my league so far. Shud be moving up a grade this season cause ive won 3 tournaments in this league so far. My leg prob is def lot better. I believe couple more times using Pauls technique will get it sorted for good. Plus increasing my fitness and leg endurance will help aswell! Got more comps in this league next week so Il keep you up to date with the legs and with the results 🙂

Many thanks again Phil.

Congratulations again on your results. Being in all three finals is an incredible achievement. Winning two makes that even more special.

I hope you move up a level next year and begin to take on some of the big boys. You'll benefit from these games and certainly learn a lot.

See you on court again, possibly in 2013!

Paul
