Practice without having a court handy

I’ve already read some suggestions, those will definitely get implemented here 😉
* Mark a curtain at 1.5m and play aiming at that from 1.9m to improve service
* Use an old curtain/sheet at the same distance, but cut a small hole in to play through

I was wondering if anyone had any other pointers to practice footwork, which is one of the many areas that I have to work on. (I am not even remotely close to the level required for a training weekend offered here.)

I can rent a court every now and then, but badminton is hard to play solo 😉

Hi
Welcome to the forum. Great to hear that you’ve been bitten by the badminton bug. You won’t regret it.

There are quite a few things you can do off court to improve your game.
Good to know you’re skipping, very important for leg strength, stamina and keeping on your toes.
Practicing serves are always a must. Good serves are a vital part of the game.
Paul has some excellent videos on YouTube called armchair exercises, well worth a watch.

The lunge is an integral part of badminton footwork but a lot of players get it wrong.
A simple practice is to hold a shuttle tube at the top in your racket hand. Lunge forward and place the tube upright on the floor.
Make sure when placing the tube that your knee and foot are straight and inline with your arm and that you land heel first.
Keep your none racket foot flat on the floor at more of a right angle to the front for good balance.
Don’t lean your body over your knee and keep your none racket arm out to help reach and balance.
Once you have mastered this you can work out your own routines incorporating steps and chasses and moving to different parts of your practice area.

Do you not have any friends who will join you for play? What about a beginners’ course? You may find someone there
prepared to develop their game. What county are you in? Someone may offer help.

I am from Belgium; I have a few folks from the club I play I may get to join me for extra practice.

Thanks for the suggestions; I have started practicing lunges with a shuttle tube 🙂 I also installed a make-shift net (Paper bag) on the right height (with another about 15cm higher so I have a 15cm space), made markings on the floor on either side on the right distance and am for a folded newspaper. 🙂

Once I got that down to an art – I hope to get there, I will work more on footwork and the recovery from (I noticed I am pretty bad at that, and it *is* important, oh so important)

Hi Moonwitch, if you type into you tube Agility Ladder footwork drills this will help speed up your footwork & is a good warm up before games. All you need is some chalk to mark out a ladder ?

I also found hitting the shuttle up against a wall helps speed up your reactions & wrist power, At the beginning the wall wins but keep going.

Also good time to practice switching grips i.e forehand / backhand.
