Hello everyone,

I started playing badminton, about two months ago more for the purpose of fitness. I started with a cheap £10 racquet and after a few weeks moved on to a £25 yonex racket.

I keep getting told that i can not hit faster shots as 'm using a cheap racquet and it'll slow down my progrss.

I need some advice on what racquet to buy. I'll try and provide as much info about my game from my limited experience.

I am super unfit, I enjoy attacking (am not sure if i'm very good at it), i generally play both doubles and singles in every two hour session i have three times a week.

My weaknesses are hitting the shuttle with the frame, not hitting hard enough for a smash, serving out of the boundaries.

I'm generally quite a competitive person and would like to invest in a racquet that will help me improve my game. I feel that lighter racquets seem to be easier to use.

I'm from London, England so 'where to buy' would be of great help if the moderator allows such recommendations.

Many thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide

Hello everyone

I am 60 years old and been playing badminton for the last 43 years. In my prime i played for the Mauritius Badminton team and had the privilege of being champion on several occasions.Although i did manage to win a few singles titles i was and am mainly a doubles player due to my aggressive style of play built on smashing.I had the opportunity of representing Mauritius in International competitions and the main one being the World Badminton Championships in Hangchou China in 1978.Through the years i have had my share of injuries ,an Achilles tendon rupture in 2002 and shoulder reconstruction surgery in 2006 to repair a badly damaged shoulder joint. However i am pleased to say that i have always managed to come back and still find great pleasure in playing at club level and participating in tournaments

Looking forward to sharing views and experiences with all of you

Philippe

Philes

A very warm welcome to this forum.

I certainly look forward to reading your words of wisdom with so much experience to share with us. I'm sure you have stories to tell and I'd love to hear your stories of playing in World Championships in 1978. Those were the days of the great Rudy Hartono, Gillian Gilks etc and so many class players. Those were the days when players outplayed their opponents rather than outgunned them.

You've also suffered very serious injuries so it would be interesting to delve into your mindset and how you made the slow recovery onto court again. I guess a lot of patience is a major requirement, but also a very strong determination and reserve to play again must have featured heavily in your recovery.

Whatever the story, I am looking forward to reading about these and I'd also like your thoughts on the modern game.

Hi, trust me the racket u have now is fine. I know a national standard irish player that when he goes to practice, plays with the cheap rackets they use at leisure centres even if they have no grips and he still destroys every1 whoever he plays.

The racket is not the problem, its technique, timing and practice. Theres no short cut. Try and find a coach or if not go onto youtube and look at how to hit the shuttle with the right stroke and right technique. Once you get better, by al means change ur racket to a better 1 which will help slightly but its only slight difference.

Hope that helps

Philip
