Hi All
I can see by the lack of posts on the subject that not many in the forum are taken by the NBL.
I’ve watched 2 matches on YouTube and I have to say I found it alright, but only that.
It’s clear from the camera angles and lack of slow-mo playback that Sky are not throwing many resources at this project.
At times the commentators seem quite desperate to ramp up the atmosphere and repeatedly told us how exciting the match is. Contrast this with the more measured, but still enthusiastic, tones of Clark and Frost.
The badminton obviously is not of the highest order but the new scoring does give the games an extra tension.
Would I watch it again, probably, because it’s better than no badminton at all.
By contrast the recent China Open finals had it all. Badminton at it’s best with plenty of OMG and How did they do that moments along with some surprise results.
If you haven’t watched it I urge you to go to BWF tv on you tube.
As always I’ll look forward to any comments from you on the NBL and China Open.

Roger
This is one of those subjects whereby not many players may have seen the footage. i haven’t watched any matches and as much as I support english badminton I prefer to watch the better matches with the limited time I have available.
Overall the english players do not excite me which is a shame. When I was a youngster I admired the english players as competed at the highest level. Whilst Badminton England wants to spin any good result into a great result, it’s sad that we are simply lacking in talent. There is so much at stake to become a top player in Asia and nothing in England. I’m not knocking our current crop of players because they deserve credit. But there is no depth. I’m still looking for personality on court with certain players making complete idiots of themselves.

I watched Merrilees vs Lane, out of curiosity. Just to have a watch on the national level in England. I was quite impressed, 2 very good players IMHO. The arena looked a bit like …, I’m not so sure, but this does not pop into my mind when I think “sportsarena”.
But, I thought I knew about badminton. At 9, these players change ends and start a second game ? And in WD afterwards, they stop at 8 all, and switch ends ?? And then they stop at 3 ????? Who on earth invented that ? I stopped watching after that. Ridiculous is the nicest word I can think of. If you want a stupid scoring system like tennis (a beautiful technical sport btw), start a new sport and call it “bad-tennis” () or something. If there would have been a Nobel prize for sports…nope. An Ignobel prize on the other hand… I don’t understand the BWF allows all of this.
Like Paul says, it is not the players. The powers that be changing the rules of a sport every odd years, actually means “we’re (still) not sure”. Explain me the benefit of that ?
Just my opinion, ED
