Doing a flick serve normally sees a level pairing drop side to side in defence, and yet not long ago I played at a good league club where, after doing a flick, my partner told me to stay in, especially with a view to killing a weak reply at the net.
Last season I had noticed some opposing pairs doing this and wondered what the general view is? I adopted this but found it odd because sometimes it wasn't clear what side to fall back to and my normal positional play was temporarily challenged!

Many thanks for your question.
In mixed doubles the positioning is very simple with the lady moving cross court to the shuttle.
In level doubles, roles can become somewhat unclear because it sometimes depends on who you play with and what system they prefer.
As a general rule, when you flick serve, you are already cross court. Your role as a pair is to be equal distance from the shuttle even though you are on a sides format. Think of an equilateral triangle with the point being the opponent cross court to you. Therefore, as the cross court player, your stance will need to be more forward than your partners. You should also be facing the attacking player.
If you take up a stance further back so you are effectively level with your partner, then you are out of position. A good smash in your direction may leave you picking up the shuttle too far in front of you, which generally gets a weak return.
I hope this helps.

Indeed, if they flick at me in doubles and they keep attacking stance, I aim for the tramlines with drop or smash (half or full smash). I only flick in MD against weak opposition (all other serves are the T and the body). In MX I ussualy only flick serving the lady. Rarely the male, unless (again) weak opponents. Whenever I flick (MD and MX), I come asside my partner in defense stance. But I'm reading a good tip from Paul here above !

The positioning in level doubles isn't in dispute. I still see league pairings with the server doing a flick and then moving across anticipating a straight net drop in order to kill it. If it doesn't come it seems to me the pair is way out of position. Maybe it's just a question of being quick enough to return a cross court smash/drop as well as a straight one! Anyway, I've been sticking with convention because it works.

I would presume that the the reason they stay at the net after the serve is because they have read the game. They have either seen the receiver way out of balance where he/she is unlikely to play any decent attacking shot or simply their opponents attack is not very strong and they feel that they would get a better advantage by keeping in attacking formation and knocking off any weak returns. Okay its technically not right and if they are playing opponents with a strong attack they will most likely pay for it but if for instance their opponents always play a drop shot when they are off balance then why not just stay at the net and kill it off?
