Hi All.
When moving from centre mid court to the net do you A: Split, Chasse, Lunge racket leg B: Split, Step Left Foot ( for right handers ), Lunge racket leg or C: Something different.
Also what footwork do you employ for returning to base.
I would be very interested for your reasons for the footwork you use.

Hi Roger,
For the front corners, I ALWAYS use (right handed):
Split-Left-Right
For recovery, it varies a great deal:
Right-Left-Split (when I have plenty of time)
Right-Split (when I have less time but still want to move towards the middle)
Chasse (for when I want to hover around the net, or don’t have far to go, or don’t have time to go far)
I find the Split-Left-Right footwork is the best generally speaking as it covers more distance than a chasse step, and distance is normally the problem!
Note: for the forehand side, I would always cross over in front of the right leg, not behind. Again – the distance is better. Notice: a small step rather than a large crossover step is basically a chasse anyway, so I think its best to learn to cover maximum distance quickly, and then adjust to make it smaller.
The recovery movements I use will be linked to the speed of the rally (determined by the choice of shot I made). This varies depending on how much time I have, whether I am playing singles, where I was when I played the shot etc. But generally speaking a big right step is all thats needed.
Cheers
Matt
