Paul

I m either driving way too short or lofting it that gives opponents a fee hit.

This only happens on backhands as my forehand drives are crisp flat fast and sharp.

Cheers

Amit,

Sounds like your backhand drive isn't “crisp” enough. Firstly, make sure the technique is correct. Some pointers:

Compact Swing (not too big)

Use your thumb (either a thumb grip or a bevel grip is probably the way to go)

Power comes from the fingers and the forearm (concentrate on finger power) – develop this power using pauls armchair exercises

The smaller the swing, the better. Less can go wrong, its easier to time, and produces all the power you need.

Take the shuttle at full reach from your body

Angling the racket head upwards (so it is closer to vertical than horizontal at contact) may help in some situations.

I’d add to Matt’s list

1) always look to take the shuttle within your “V”
2) keep your head up so that you’re able to use your peripheral vision to decide whether the drive is the right shot for the occasion
3) good posture to ensure you can recover well

Paul and Matt

Thanks very much for your advice.

I have worked hard on my drives and they are coming a lot better now.

This is really helping my game, especially in doubles where i m able to exploit spaces much better.

Cheers

Thanks Matt for your input.

Again, well done on your development – I love reading stories like this.
