Bear in mind rich, that when one of us masters our timing troubles, that is the best possible news for the other! If one of us can do it, the other can!

Target practice is an excellent way of practising the smash placement. Personally, I do this when I warm up, by aiming at a part of my warm up partners half court. I can hit the tramlines, or the inside lines, or aim at one side of him or the other. However, once I focussed on the stomach pointing towards the direction you want the shuttle to go (nb: if stomach points in the direction, actually, the hips and shoulders are pointing in that direction too 😛 but I find the stomach easier to consider) I basically haven't ever missed with a smash. This is a big deal for me. I play a lot of singles, I haven't smashed “out” in the last week (except when I am horrifically off balance, and shouldn't be smashing anyway 😛 )

Let us know how you get on 🙂

Line up a few tubes of shuttles as they make great targets. You can stand them next to each other or make “goal posts” where you only win the point if you score between the posts. That's a great target.

You can also use boxes as targets, so there's plenty to aim for.

Oh dear! Just got back from practice where I have been smashing like an old woman with a tennis racket! I think i hit one smash from the rear court which wasnt returned all night and even in the mid court I wasn't burying the shuttle. I think this discussion just got into my head far too much and i was over thinking it completely! Im afraid my frustration increasingly got the better of me as well Matt and thus i wasnt really able to notice the alignment of my stomach with the shuttle direction.

Oh well, i will be taking my frustration out on a squash ball tomorrow morning and then back on a proper court Thursday night where I'll try and find some sort of middle ground between thinking and errr…not thinking. You know what i mean anyway!Laugh

So Ive tried this out, if a little briefly. I made three 'shuttle tube goals' – one on the centre line and another two down the sides of the court. Then  i had my brother feed me shuttles high to the right, left or centre of the rear court and then shout which goal he wanted me to aim for just as the shuttle began to drop. THIS IS SURPRISINGLY HARD! Firstly, trying to process the call of right, left or centre when your focusing on the shuttle is really difficult!  Furthermore,  I'm so used to aiming my smash at certain areas of the court from a particular position that i found it hard to go for a specific target instead.

…Needless to say the scores weren't prolific! I got 4 'goals' from about 25 attempts. So… for some unknown reason, rather than master this i decided to move the shuttle tube goals slightly further forward in the court and jump smash instead. This did not go well…with the call being shouted and the jumping and aiming all at the same time I was nowhere near any of them and i kept mistiming my smash and either hitting it in the net (a lot) or hitting a very flat smash.

Also, one thing i did notice about my shuttle placement was that when the shuttle being fed wasn't particularly deep in the court, occasionally i tended to pull my smash to the left hand side – i imagine that this is due to deficiencies in my technique but if anyone can further enlighten me that would be super!

I'll definitely persevere with this though and hopefully start to improve my accuracy.

This will not work as well as you want it to. You see you're asking someone to shout instructions to you which then takes time to process.

By the time you've done this, with travel and technique to add to the equation, you're asking too much. Here's a few ideas for you.

1) set the tubes in a pair as goal posts. Create a simple drill like serve, lift, smash and see how many you can get through the goal posts. Make the posts around 1 metre wide to begin with. Monitor your scores.

2) increase the degree of difficulty of the feed (e.g. lower lift) so you're getting up to game speed. Monitor your score. If you're still hitting 4/6 then begin to close the goal posts until you're hitting less than 2. You now know the level of intensity versus the level of accuracy you currently have.

3) repeat the exercise but place the goal posts (back to original spacing) in a different area on the court (e.g. singles practice down the lines and cross court – doubles practice inside hip area and channel attack).

Now you've got a ton of work to do.

Once you've done this you can ask your feeder to take this to another level whereby you're training your eyes a little harder.

e.g. in a singles situation, once your feeder has lifted, they move to the correct base position and then choose to move either left or right as though they were anticipating your smash. So, in the left court, they move left to cover their line.

The exercise is for you to spot the movement and smash to the other side of the court. This is very difficult as you're having to train your eyes on focussing on the shuttle and retaining peripheral vision to note where your opponent has moved.

Let me know how this goes.

Rich: if you do the drills that paul suggests, and can, over a few months get better at them, then you will be a smashing king on the court! Thats my opinion 🙂

As a brief aside, I was rather pleased in my recent doubles match to HIT the racket hip of opposing players 10 times during the evening (3 matches). 2 of these they got their racket to it but couldn't do anything with the shuttle, the other 8 were all clean body shots, hitting their racket hip. My aiming practises have been a success 🙂

Rich

You're welcome. We all learn from the forum and that's why I encourage contribution.

I learn a lot from you guys and your posts give me ideas for articles, so we all benefit.

I'm looking forward to reading about your next smashing practice.

By the way, initially I'd take some power out of the smash and focus on technique and accuracy.

Paul
