Stupidity of some league clubs

There are three badminton leagues a fair drive from where I live. Two have useful clubs in that they welcome new members and have good websites. The third, which I won’t mention here, has a merely functional website added to which a few clubs appear to deter new members! Not only that, but in the results posted I see these particular clubs can sometimes only put out two pairs for a match. Given that I contacted them politely and know at least two other players willing to play in the league you’d think they’d be keen to welcome new faces. What really gets me is that no club notices appear on the website, unlike others that take advertising for new players, and so for anyone new in the area it’s just down to guesswork.

Also, I notice websites of all types seem reluctant to post contact details of clubs and societies, citing some guff about data protection. Funny that considering the other two badminton clubs post useful contact details of all secretaries and match organisers. To me, one of the issues with badminton in general is its lack of open doors. I know this isn’t always the case and many areas and individual clubs are welcoming, but those that aren’t are doing badminton a disservice. People often tell me local league badminon has a declining membership and divisions are getting smaller. Well, the way some local leagues operate it’s no wonder.

I believe when clubs have new people turn up, some people feel threatened. I.e there place in a team. Our club welcomes complete beginners to first division / county players.
When I played in the Essex league 1 club only advertise for league players & then vetted them over the next four weeks before deciding if they can stay..
But even at our club here you here muttering about, hope I don’t get picked with them as the game will be over in 5 minutes then I’ll have to wait between 10 – 15 mins to get a decent game.
I visited some clubs over the summer just to play different players & you can the cliques, players who will take their peg off the board or cheat on the peg board.

So Dee did you find a new club to play for in the end?

I guess you’re right about some folk feeling threatened by new members, and that’s just one of the souring aspects of club play for me. I haven’t bothered to play league this season although I did contact two clubs but it’s clear they can’t be a88ed about anything much judging by zero responses to emails. That’s one reason why I think every league ought to have club contacts on its web pages along with latest info, especially for clubs looking for players. This year I’ve decided to pay ad hoc visits to a club I belonged to years ago and they’re happy with that. We play singles and doubles at a good level (the mens team is in the top division), and what with various business interests it suits me now because I don’t have to commit to a team (but I would have and could have introduced one or two more players).

To me some clubs seem to want to be kind of ‘exclusive’ rather than inclusive. I suppose overall I’ve been fortunate to belong to several good ones in different areas over the years and only occasionally come across clubs that specialise in indifference, or cheat not only peg boards but line calls too! They’re in the minority but they do pi88 me off!

Dobbie, what’s with the four-week vetting at that club you mentioned? Do players have to prove something???

Hi Dee, they have to prove that they are of a standard good enough to play in a league. But funny enough they are now struggling to get new people in through the door. What a difference 5 years make.
I hate cheaters also, All they are doing is cheating themselves into thinking they are good players.
It’s a real shame your not playing in the league this year. In suffolk we have every club listed with contact details whether they play with plastics what night they have club night & match nights plus post codes for sat navy’s, guess we are lucky down here.
