Hi, I have over the last few months been doing my best to see which leg the opposition have their weight on, especially when I’m about to serve. Does anybody else do this? Is there any mileage in doing this? Plus am I right in my thinking that you would place the shuttle down the side of the leg with the weight on? Will be interested in people’s thoughts.

Interesting topic. I have personally never given it any thought or looked to expose it. The main thing I look for is whether someone has their weight on their heels.
If I were to consider this situation though, I would only consider this on serve – otherwise I think its irrelevant. On serve, I would look if they have their weight back or forwards. Also consider, some people have their weight back so they can spring forwards – if they want to move backwards, they actually have to transfer weight to their front leg to then push backwards. However, I think its quite an easy movement regardless and I wouldn’t decide how to serve based on their weight distribution, but instead based around how well they respond to the serves anyway.

Thanx Matt for your thoughts, I was also thinking about the third shot as well as from the serve, hoping to catch them with the wrong weight distribution & if they have their legs loaded or not. Then see if I can affect their balance one way or another. But sometimes I think too much & should just play.

Personally I think you should just play. What you are planning will potentially help now but not against better opposition. Much better to consider strengths and weaknesses in how they deal with the third shot or serve, than in trying to guess or influence their weight. They could have very good weight distribution, and still be terrible at receiving certain serves aimed towards their racket shoulder. Someone else with bad weight distribution may handle that serve really well. Good luck!

Sometimes you can over-think and this is what is happening here.
By all means size up the player and their weight distribution in their stance for returning serve. Even good players don’t always have a good stance even when they are fast. All this does is give you a clue whether they may be faster or slower coming forward to attack the serve. After that, you need to watch the shuttle and study positioning rather than watch the players bodyweight positioning.
