I have a question for anybody in the “know”.

Basically, I was told by someone at my club that for the 2012 (it may have been 2013) season, there is a new rule about badminton posts. You can only play matches using the new badminton posts which have the supports facing outwards and do not have anything on the court. These posts are already being used by professionals, but apparently they will be a requirement soon.

I mentioned this to my brother about this who told his club and they wanted more information on it. However, there is nothing on the internet about it and information is hard to come by. The only information I know of is I think that some clubs were notified by Badminton England and it is Badminton England that are enforcing the rule.

Does anyone know anything about this? Either to confirm what I have said or to give extra information?

Any help would be of a help, and thank you in advanced!

Cool

Yes, I’ve heard about this. To be honest I don’t expect many sports centres or schools are going to rush out and buy new posts – most will continue with what they’ve already got.

Paul, do you know when the “rule” may come into effect? As in, compulsory? Or should it be in 2012 but it's up to each league to decide whether to act upon the rule (much like the new scoring system, not all leagues did used it straight away. I know of one league that only started using it last season!).

I understand what you mean about schools and sports centres not rushing to get new posts, and I wouldn't be surprised in the current situation we are in at the moment, but I was just trying to find out more about it. More information, if there is any and what information people know. The information I have been given is very vague as I am not a member of the committee or anything.

I think there is an advert in Courtside Magazine about it.

I can’t see how this rule can be enforced with clubs. Most clubs play in school halls so I don’t see them paying for new posts. Whilst it might be a new rule, what can Badminton England so if a club continues playing with “illegal” posts? – Nothing, I guess.

Thanks Paul, certainly food for thought. I will have a look and see if I can find the advert out of interest.

I am guessing that at the County level and high end tournaments might enforce such a rule, but again, as you said, if they didn’t it is unlikely that anything would come about from it.

There are times when rules are changed on an international basis but when we get to grass roots there’s no will, inclination or desire to follow.
