Just wanted to find out from our group of experts if it is worth investing in some Badminton shoes and if they make a difference to your overall gameplay. I know they say that they are very light and flexible in terms of bounce but is this all true?

Do anyone of you have a pair and is it worth the extra money to spend on a pair? If yes then what are the best makes out there and what should I look out for in a pair of badminton shoes.

I have seen some cheap hi-tek ones for around £15 and some Yonex ones for around £25….

Any kind of help will be good.

Thanks in advance Smile

Rahul,

I personally think that shoes are the most important thing for any badminton player. Much more important than clothing and racket.

Wearing the wrong type of shoe could be dangerous for you given the full range of dynamic movements involved in badminton, but given that, I would expect most indoor court shoes should be fine. I would personally recommend buying a good pair of Yonex shoes (i usually get the mid range yonex shoes) simply because they last well and the padding in them makes them really comfortable, and actually feels so much bouncier than a lot of regular trainers (which is good for jumping!).

A good pair of shoes, in my opinion, really is worth it. But if you do get a good pair, please please please don't wear them except on court – no point in spoiling them eh?

Shoes are the most important thing in any sport in my opinion, maybe not swimming.

As always, budget comes first, then comfort, then prettiness.

Be careful about buying running shoes, they have completely different foot/ankle support to court shoes.

Thanks guys for your help. I'll defo invest in a good pair of Badminton shoes as currently using some running trainers (ooops).

Have seen some Yonex SHB58 and the SHB 101 which are not too overly priced.

This should get me started.

There's an article somewhere about shoes, Yonex one's in particular.

Paul wrote it so might be worth you trawling through for it.

If I remeber right it sang the praises of the 101's and 200's.

You might want to think about the width of your feet too when getting shoes. I had a nightmare trying to get new shoes till I brought some Prince shoes that were narrow, so when I do these up they really grip my feet where if you have wide shoes with narrow feet you will find your feet moving around a lot inside causing blisters and sore toes.

In theory Yonex would be the way to go as they have badminton shoes but you could always try squash shoes as the playing surface is about the same as most badminton halls. Which reminds me, some Yonex shoes are designed for the fabric carpet type courts that the professionals play on, so if you used them in a sports hall (generally a tad dusty), then they will become useless as you will slide around everywhere. So check the bottom of the shoes and that they are not totally rock hard.

Just my 2p

The main difference between running shoes and badminton shoes is the sole. Badminton shoes have thinner soles, which reduces the risk of twisting an ankle (the downside is that no badminton shoe will ever have cushioning anywhere near as good as a decent pair of running shoes), and they're also made of a different rubber compound which grips better indoors (and doesn't leave marks on the court).

As always, fit and comfort are far more important than bells and whistles (don't buy into the hype) – and it's absolutely NOT a case of “you get what you pay for”. Obviously you *must* try them on first – don't just buy online to save a yourself few quid. Personally, I found Yonex shoes had the worst cushioning, and were also very narrow compared to other brands, but that was a long time ago (I haven't bought Yonex shoes again since because of that).

I wear Babolat Shadows, which are great – very good levels of grip, shock-absorption and durability. You may or may not like the fact that they're bright orange…

I know some people who swear by some of the Karakal court shoes.

I don't think the make is all that imoprtant, as long as they are fit for purpose – injury prevention in a sport dominated by fast, explosive movements in multiple directions.
