Everyone has an opinion about shoes. Buying shoes should fall under the same criteria as buying a racquet. We’re all different so try a few pairs and buy what you think is the right fit for you.
If you compare running shoes to badminton shoes you’ll notice that the sole on running shoes has an outward taper compared to a rounded sole on badminton. This is for stability reasons. In badminton we don’t move as much in straight lines and therefore this outward taper would be a hindrance rather than help. A rounded sole is required for drag and fast changes of direction.
So, as everyone has said so far, make sure you buy a pair of badminton shoes.

To pick up on what Paul said, I seem to remember at some point someone (and I could be completely wrong – and it doesn't help I can't remember who) that compared to most trainers, good badminton shoes have less lateral support (to stop the foot rolling). This sounds crazy right? Surely we want lots of support to protect ourselves? The explanation I was given, is that because these supports are likely to come under a lot of strain if they were there, a critical failure in these supports would result in a severe injury. Thus, it is better not to have the supports, so that we naturally develop this stability, instead of relying on the footwear.
I realise that was all very hand-wavy and vague, but you get the idea – too much support may be a bad thing if we push ourselves beyond the limits of support a shoe can provide, and don't learn to move without relying on the footwear to do so.

I'd always worn cheap badminton or tennis shoes for playing in until a couple of years ago as I'm a 12.5/13 and struggle to find just what i want in my size. Then I decided to splash out when i found a 12.5 and bought a pair of Yonex SHB-101LTD's and could'nt believe the difference. I can't recommend these shoes highly enough and i've not felt such stability in my ankles whilst playing. They're still in pretty good nick as well after two seasons of hard wear (especially when they're carrying 16 stones of yours truly haha) and they look great too! Will be purchasing another pair in the near future.

Oo, that works !!
25 years of football and rugby and lots of running in training and I've never had a blister.
The secret is to wear cotton socks beneath whatever the other socks are.
It doesn't work the same if you just wear cotton socks, no idea why.
This is an extremely common fact amongst footballers

I think the only time I have ever suffered from blisters when playing is when ive not played for a few months and then had a really tough session. As soon as I start playing 2-3 times a week I have no problems at all. I do tend to get a thickening of the skin on the balls of my feet though. Does anyone who plays daily suffer from blisters?
