amleto: nothing I do can prevent me from destroying my shoes! Every pair I have ever had has died within 10 months. However, I have just switched from £40ish yonex to their new SHBSC3MX – price wise a little step up from the previous lot. OH MY GOODNESS. What a fantastic shoe. I have never felt this level of support before – I felt so quick around the court, had so much grip even in the halls with “slippery” floors. And they are protected quite heavily from the usual wear and tear associated with badminton shoes. So far, they are looking like a really good find!

Every player is different.

I’ve known players get 2-3 seasons out of one pair of shoes because they don’t sweat much, others I’ve seen destroy shoes in 2-3 months from the same amount of play.

Because I only coach, I can get 5-7 years out of a shoe. As I’m sponsored, I have to change to promote the latest shoes otherwise I wouldn’t need another pair.

The latest shoes from Yonex have been met with mixed response. SHB102’s have not been liked as much but other models such as SHB92 (yellow shoes worn by LCW) seem to have taken favour with many players. SHBSC3MX is one of those shoes that may take time to find favour with players but it certainly is a good shoe.

Personally I like SHB85 and SHB92 although at my age I’ve not taken the plunge and opted for yellow shoes! Saying that I also don’t like to live in the past so I feel a conflict approaching when I next choose my attire for 2011-12!

There are other shoes on the market and some brands are very good. Victor has superb shoes, so does Asics. I really can’t speak for many other brands as I don’t have the experience with them. I know Direct Sports sell a lot of Yonex and Asics shoes.

Overall, if you buy cheap then you’re not going to get the best for your feet. Invest well in your footwear, after all, they’re the only thing between you and the court. Poor shoes will hinder your movement and therefore your performance so choose wisely.

I've been through a couple of pairs of shoes recently so these are my thoughts if they help.

Got a pair of Asics Gel Blast 3's at Christmas. The cushioning is first class, most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. However, after a couple of weeks I was getting sore ankles, something I've never suffered with before. The only difference in my game was the shoe so I went back to my old Yonex shoes and the pain went away after a week or so.

Turn's out that the Asics shoe is 5mm lower round my ankle which may have been affecting the support, also the grip of my Yonex shoes, especially my new SHB 92's, is far better, so I can put my weight down with far more confidence.

These two things combined means I can't see myself ever going away from Yonex again in terms of shoes. Even now I can put on the Asics shoes and they feel great, good support, the whole package, but they just don't work somehow.

ps, I have the quiet and understated SILVER 92's Wink

I’ve heard of this problem with other brands of shoes before. Also, I’ve seen fit players almost crippled due to poor shoes causing problems with their achiles tendon.

It’s so hard to buy these days because of choice but also the unavailability to test or try at most local sports shops, especially in UK.

I think choise of shoe is as individual as rackets. I would never trust a non-badminton related brand. On the other hand, the best player of our club has some fancy indoor football shoe he wears (with velcro closing, no laces), and he playes everybody home in MX and MD. So, there goes my statement.

Cheers, ED

Hello everyone,

I will buy another pair of Yonex SHB 101 (but this time, it will be the LTD Blue/Black Edition). I think I can't be wrong by doing this (Again, thank you for your advice, Paul). For the colours, it's just personnal taste :-D.

It will be easier for me to change between my two pairs of shoes. I'm still thinking about the fact of using the new pair for the tournaments only when the old one will be used for training. Don't know if it will change anything.

Note : I had to change the inner sole of the SHB 101 with special soles made for my feet only for better support. I hate the “wave sole” thingy provided by Yonex.

Thanks for that. It’s better to be absolutely confident with your shoes.

Hello again, another “I'm selecting shoes” post.

The selection is somewhat limited here in Holland. The yellow LTD SHB92 is not in store and since the 102 MX is received with mixed responses,  I'm torn between the 85 LTD , the 101 LTD and the 101 MX.
Though I understand that the 101 LTD and the 101MX are nearly the same?

Now I've read that the 85LTD is lighter than the 101LTD/MX while the 101LTD/MX is more comfortable.
While the best approach would be testing them both, I'd like some input from your side.
Which shoe do you guys prefer?

I currently use SHB85. It’s simialr to SHB65 which was launched in Japan and has been chosen as the best shoes by so many of the pro players. Very few of them can be seen using SHB101 in whatever form. When the limited edition shoes were first introduced, many went for the SHB85 rather than SHB101. Some chose SHB101 purely on the colour as it matched the red clothing they were asked to wear.

Both shoes are good and there is not much in the weight variation. From memory SHB85 is slightly lighter, but is still a substantial shoe.

You can probably get SHB92 in yellow from UK by contacting the likes of Direct Sports although please make sure you make allowances for the sizing as UK sizes are quoted. If you already have pair of Yonex shoes, you should be able to get the right size from the label on the inside of the tongue.

Firstly, thanks for your quick reply.

I see that that badminton shop here also has the non-LTD version of the 85 and the 92.
So the SHB101 and the SHB102 aren't really the best of shoes, I guess I'll have to choose between the 85, the 85LTD and the 92 then.
I think I'll just go to the store tomorrow and see which one fits me best, though if I had to choose now I'd probably go for the regular SHB85.

Once again, thanks a ton!
