If you can purchase SHB92 and you like them, then I'd suggest you purchase another pair whilst you can. Shoe technology is not going to make you faster, or better at movement so it's best to stock up when you find a shoe that really works for you.

SHB 86 are very nice and possibly close to the width of SHB92 but I'm not 100% certain. I haven't tried 92's to compare.

Hi Paul,

Just an update.. I purchased my SHB 92MX from DirectSports..

They are fantastic.. as advised I bought a half size up from my normal shoes size and they fit perfectly.

I must say I genuinely feel better playing badminton with these shoes in.. (I had standard trainers on before..)  probably the most I notice is less fatigue.. I am bouncing all over the place.. hehehe.

Probably the best purchase for badminton so far.. or at least on a par with my VT80 racquet.

Hello,

I found this great site when searching for advice on badminton equipment.  Thanks to Paul and other members for sharing your experience and opinions.

Recently I needed to buy a racket, and after reading Paul's reviews  I decided on Yonex Voltric 5. I am really happy with my decision. Now I need another pair of shoes. Having read this thread, I am considering 3 options: Yonex SHB 92, Yonex SHB 85 and Yonex SHB 200. Can someone please give a very brief comparison between them? From what I read, 92 and 85 are quite similar, and 200 comes to consideration because Paul wrote a good review about it.

If it matters, here is my background: I am a club player, over 40y old. I have training 2 times a week + matches against other clubs (1x  per 2-3 weeks).  During my games I make a lot of movement (perhaps more than necessary) due to my hectic play style, but I don't jump much (can't do that yet).

Regards,

Tony

Tony

i have just answered your question elsewhere on my blog.

Please remember that 200 and 85 are no longer availabe unless someone has old stock. They were both superceeded by SC5 and 86 respectively.

I really like the look of 92 in yellow but don't expect i will be wearing them at my age.

Paul,

after some more consideration I crossed out SHB 92, yellow is a bit too much for my taste. I have wide foot, so SHB 200 seems an attractive choice to me (I live in Germany where it's still possible to find 85 & 200). But the higher built makes me a bit worried about stability. I am currently using SHB 57 and I am happy with them, though they are  much worn and slowly need replacement. How do the 85/86 compare to 57?

I just saw that there are also SHB 58/59, which are priced very reasonably (55 EUR). Looks like another good choice to consider if they are similar to 57 (OMG too many choices:).

I loved my old 92's and would have happily bought another pair if they were still available. Didn't fancy the yellow ones, bit too flash for me. I replaced them with the black & white 86's and I couldn't be happier. Excellent grip, look smart, very comfortable.

The only down side I see for Yonex shoes is durability. Nearly everyone I play with has had a pair split on them, my 92's split at the heel. It's a shame that build quality seems to be an issue for the worlds premier badminton company, especially on shoes costing over £50.

Maybe we're expecting too much though, we all play 2-3 times a week at a high level, perhaps we should be thankful we get as long as 18 months from them!

SHB 58/59 will be the next generation SHB57 – no surprises there.

Rob, I've come across a number of players reporting splits in shoes which is both surprising and disappointing. Obviously there are issues with quality control.

There seems to be a number of grumbles regarding Yonex quality and I have to agree with some of the comments. I wouldn't expect paintwork to be flaking on a top of the range Voltric Z Force and yet many have mentioned this in various forums, albeit this is happening after the racket has been restrung.

I haven't witnessed this myself but it's still a shame. Yonex need to be careful because other brands are marching forwards and they cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Being the premier brand means they have to do everything better than the others. Sadly, I don't believe this is the case anymore. Some people in Yonex world need to get a reality check in terms of what the competition is doing to surpass them.

sorry OT: while shoes and rackets seem the major investments,  I find myself spend most money on shuttlecocks. I used to play nylon shuttlecocks (Yonex Mavis 350/2000) in the university, but now people in my club just don't like them and I have no choice but play feather.

I used to have 57. They were cheap and I found them very good for that money. About half a year ago they were end of life and I replaced them with SHB59U. But, the stitching at my minimus (is this correct English, the smallest toe ?) on my racket foot (I'm right handed). On this model a black or a blue stripe is inserted between the leather on the top of the shoe, and the side of the shoe. And this after only 2 weeks of playing. Went back to the shop, and got a new pair of 59's. A month later, same story. Went back to the store and I payed extra for a pair of SHB85. Those are great shoes.

Those 2 pairs of 59U may have had quality issues, but they certainly have a design fault. Google the model and have a look. There's no way this design can hold the forces your foot makes on your shoe when you have to reach for the net. All other more expensive shoes dont have stitching at that position. I wonder how would that come Laugh !

My message being: Tony, if you fancy a pair of 59's, skip them, pay a little more, and buy good shoes. Mind the stitching !

Cheers, ED
