So…
How often do people generally need to re-string their rackets?
I've had mine for 4 months now and used it 3 times a week. (early intermediate club play) Is it due a re-string? Or if the strings haven't broken do you keep playing until they do?
Would be interesting to know how often different player and different level players change theirs.

In general, I change mine after about 3 months (playing 3-4 times a week).
I can usually feel when the tension has dropped a bit too much for me (I get poor net shot control)
I use BG80 and I've found after a couple of months the tension can change quite significantly in a few days.
This said, I string them myself so it only works out to approx £1 a month.

I never replace strings before they break, but I use thin strings (Ashaway ZM62) so they always break before there's any appreciable loss of performance.
How long they actually last me is quite variable. Gradual wear and tear doesn't seem to be an issue – rather, the strings go from perfect to broken in the space of 1-2 mis-hit smashes. If I'm playing well they'll last me a long time; if I'm having a bad day they won't make it through the first warm up after a re-string.
My advice to you, would be to consider how often you're prepared to re-string your racket(s), based on your budget and the amount of inconvenience it causes you – and then experiment with strings until you find one that will last you roughly that length of time. If your current strings are lasting you 4 months, they're probably very thick, and designed for durability rather than performance (eg. Yonex BG65/BG55). If you switched to a thinner string, it would likely give you *much* better performance, but still “acceptable” durability.

Great advice here. I can't really add any more. As usual we find that that choices such as string type and tension are as personal as choosing a racquet.
Some of the decisions are easier based on numer of times you play per week, which type of shuttle you play with, standard of player, personal preferences regards feel, budget v inconvenience.
In some respects that a lot to balance, but with a bit of experience it becomes a lot easier.
