Hi all, I'm an intermediate club player, mainly doubles, I play a fairly strong power game but I'm looking to improve my touch play.

I've been playing with a couple if APACS Edgesaber Zsparks (looks like a ZSlash but nothing like really… but £30 each) it's a medium flex racket, I'd say even balance, plenty of power – originally strung at 22lbs and 26lbs (I knew I'd get them restrung the same later) – strung with a fairly springy APACS string. To be honest they were bought in a hurry when I broke my last 20 year old Carbonex 10 – and although they were good enough to get me going I've never been totally happy with them. They are great for pure power game (even the one that is supposed to be 26lbs) but I personally find them difficult around the net -and on the more finessed shots so really I'm looking for something that I'm more comfortable wiith. I've adapted to the APACS for most shots – smash, clear, defence, serve etc but around the net I just can't make it work – either not enough and it's in the net or too much and it is too deep/high. Strangely both the 22lb and 26lb rackets play near the same at the net (or at least I do when I'm playing with themEmbarassed)

Unfortunately I'm going to have to buy without testing – there's just no way I can test – so I'm trying to mush up all of the info out there and take pot luck this time around… I'm sticking with Yonex as I've never had a bad Yonex racket (all be it that the early C10s were a bit fragile).

I've found some cracking deals on the ARC100/ARC7 – at £90 but I do have a few concerns that it might be a bit like for like with the APACS in terms of control – or am I reading too much into the shaft stiffness and not enough into other stuff that impacts on how it plays? Would this be a good “control” racket? String it medium-high tension with a harder string maybe?

I quite fancied the AT900T and P (not really put off by their “soon to be discontinued” status) – I think the P would add control to my natural game and the T migh force me to change my game the way I want it to go. But they are about £30 more and not sure if there is a lot of gain there. ARC10 and also 8DX are quite appealing but not sure I have enough power to get the best out of them. (Suppose that applies to the ATs as well…)

Last up is the Voltric 70 which of course is seriously pricey but the slight-head heavy + power + control is a very attractive package. (All be it that if I break it I might regret the decision…)

Mentally I always liked the Carbonex 8 but after a lot of time getting used to the less head heavy 10 I always played better with the 10. Not sure what the actual balance of the 10 was – neutral I think? FWIW I also intend to get the APACS restrung but I'll take some advice from the stringer I'm going to use – but thinking maybe BG80 or 65Ti to make the feel a bit harder.

Any thoughts would be appreciated – I know I'm unlikely to get it perfect first time round but just wanted to run my thinking past some folks who would pick up some faux pas thinking! Damn it was easier when they only had one all carbon racket in the range Cool

Stretch

You raise a lot of good points here and I can understand why you're having difficulty choosing your next racquet.

First off, restringing your existing racquets in BG80 or BG65Ti is a good move and this could literally transform the feel of these racquets.

Before you make a potentially painful choice, I think it's worth establishing whether you now prefer head heavy, head light or even balance racquets. This alone will point you in the right direction regarding potential replacements for your beloved Cab 10.

Once this is known, you need to decide whether you prefer stiff or medium flex shafts. Again, this will narrow the field a little and maybe you'd be looking at 1 or 2 racquets to choose from.

Good luck with this and keep us informed.

I think I'm definitely in the Even – Head Heavy category. I do at least have the chance to get into the dealer and swish them around so that is as good as it is going to get. The APACS ZSpark is balance at 285mm+/- 5mm so I think that is just on the head heavy side of neutral. I quite often feel that some of my timing issues might be helped by a little more headweight/balance but I mean a little – so that is the thought process!

Stiffness is harder to judge without testing – I suspect I'll either be on stiff with lower tension strings, or medium with higher tension strings. I'll just have to make a best guess from my swooshing Cool I could always just buy the one I like the look of the most… Arc8DX is pretty… however, I am a little uncertain by the Extra stiff shafts. I'm confident that I can work the head on a stiff shaft (6ft 5″ 190lbs and 20+ years of archery mean my wrists are pretty strong!)- but Extra Stiff – I'd imagine timing rather than brute force becomes critical?  Hmmm. But given the touch game I'm looking to improve it makes the Stiffer shaft seem ideal (or maybe the Voltric if I'm feeling flush that day…)

We'll see – hopefully getting to the shop this weekend or next. I'll be sure to post my final choice and findings!

Well,  I have now swished and swooshed appropriately and and puchased my first Yonex in 20 odd years Smile

I tried hard to like the Arc7 but it just didn't feel right. On comparison with my APACS racket the APACS is definitely headlight -this gave the ARC7 a neutral but slightly dull feel (for me). Next up was the AT900T – better but no. Then the AT900P – ooo that one I liked! It felt very natural for me – and was confident that I'd be happy with that. I looked at a few of the other ARC rackets but no -the 8DX primarily because I was unsure about the extra stiff shaft. Last up came the Voltric 70 -yup that was the one for me. Felt very similar to the AT900P but when it came to speed of movement etc it was much livelier. I blind tested them all and came up with the same answer.

Once bought and on court it lived up to expectations – it was no miracle cure – I still have a lot of work to do on the touch game. But my smash is heavier (and it was pretty good already),  clears are effortless (even my weak high backhand clear was much improved). In control the headweight means I can generate more power and more controlled direction change with a flick of the wrist. After a few minutes hitting timing was generally a lot better with far fewer “what happened there?” shots – generally I could put the shuttle where I wanted. I also felt that I could use my height better and smash from deeper as  I seemed to be able to bring the shuttle down more steeply (and harder) with the V70.

My touch remains dodgy -but the feel is there. Missed drops now at least making it to the tape Laugh and some beginning to be where I want them to be as I get more confident to “cut” – just couldn't do that with the APACS.

The only negative is on defense – the headlight APACS was very quick – but I think it is just a timing issue – I'm getting racket on it still just not getting the wrist timing quite right. Needs work.

APACS are also being restrung at 23lbs with BG65ti so it will be interesting to see how they improve – the stringer felt that the tension in them was not very even.

BTW If anyone is looking for a racket shop in the Edinburgh area I have a recommendation – lots of choice, internet prices and great advice.

Thanks for all your help!

Congratulations Stretch on your new racquet. I think the Voltric 70 is a brilliant racquet. I'll be getting my hands of Voltric 5 and 7 next week and the new Voltric 80 at All Englands the following week.
