For a player yuor son’s age, I would suggest you start at 20lbs tension. Some will completely disagree with me but I beleive he still needs a larger sweet spot. As his technique progresses he can test in increments of 1lb until he discovers his ultimate tension. However, please check the recommended tensions on the racquet (these are maximum).

The difficulty when talking tension is that we all have an opinion. Mine is based on 25 years stringing and coaching. There can be an ego contest here if not curtailed – an almost “mine is bigger than yours mentality.” Or, the pros have “X” lbs tension so that’s what I want. Overall, this isn’t healthy for the game. 90% of players could not play with a pro players racquet.

Hope this helps but remember it’s only a general guide and there are always exceptions to the rule.

Paul

Well, I got a VT7 for my son. I couldn't resist and so I dressed myself up as Paul (Laugh) and did a comparison between this VT7 and my AT900T.
The 7 was factory strung (arround 8-8,5kg) with BG55. My 900 has 65Ti@9,5kg. It is in total 5gr lighter than the 900, and a bit more head heavy (an indicator on the shaft of the balance point would be nice to have, you can immediately have an idea how head heavy a racket is compared to another, although it's not a mathmatical figure). This VT7 is medium flex, the 900 is stiff.
My son played rather well with it, and when his session was over, I did a practical comparison (with feathers RSL):
Oh boy, I had difficulty telling the difference. No time needed to adjust or anything. Just maybe (but this might be perception), my smashes were a bit harder. This really felt like a 900T, but (since I'm the one that's paying) for HALF the price ! Hahaa ! SmileSmileSmile
Well, this is my impression, and be aware I'm no professional player, no coach, no experienced racket reviewer or tester (only know MP25, 33, 66, AT700 and AT900T). But (IMHO) Paul gave this racket a 5 star rating, I can only agree. Quality/price ratio is impressive. This VT7 with BG65Ti at 9-10kg, looks promising !

Cheers, ED

Ed, have you found yourself a replacement for your AT900 for half the price??? Yonex have obviously done a good job on these rackets 😉

Well it felt like my AT900T. I bought my 900 for 140€, this VT7 is 80€. And to my feeling, it was difficult to tell the difference. So yes, yonex engineers did a very fine job !

All the best, ED

Ed

That’s interesting because I recently likened the racquet to a 900T too.
