I have always been picking up shuttles with my racket, however recently, with my new racket, the strings damage easily. When I pick up shuttles, on fresh strings, there is clear damage after picking up about 25 shuttles. Are there any ways to avoid this when stringing or just the pick up itself. The obvious answer is don't use the racket ,but it's a habit and I often forget not to. Cheers

What racket are you using? What brand? Sounds like the paint is a bit (pardon the pun) flakey.

Perhaps less scraping along the floor and more flick is needed?

victor mx60, the stringing pattern causes the strings to come above the trench just on the part of the racket that picks up shuttles. I will trying to change the way I pick up shuttles though, cheers

I only asked as some brands paint jobs aren't as good as they could be and flake easily. Don't know anything about Victor so I can't comment.

The only other thing you can do is put a thin strip of tape on the outside of the racket, I have seen many people do this. I think there is tape just for this, but you could try some insulation tape or something first to see if you like it. I tried it once but it wasn't for me as I felt it changed the racket slightly, but then that could have just been in my head. Masking tape is quite light, you could try that as well.

I play a VT7, strings are protected by the frame. But my supplier always puts tape on top of the racket blade after restringing or when purchasing. Protects the blade, and the strings. Peter's correct: flick when you pick up the shuttle.

Good idea, I never though of this, I will try tape on the top and see how it goes, I'm not too fussed about appearance. I will mention to my stringer next time too just to see if the strings could be slightly re positioned below the trench.
While I'm here I would say victors paint job is better than yonex (with my old arcsaber at least) and it seems only the very top layer of paint/words has rubbed off due to me picking up shuttles.

Thanks for the input here.

Tape is the only way. Be careful not to use lead tape unless you are looking to increase the weight in the head of the racket. Whilst lead tape may last longer, the balance of the racket will change.

Those members who string will know that the changes made to rackets in terms of their stringing pattern, coupled with the thinning of the groove as expsoed string at the top of the head. Even very careful layering cannot always hide the string under the frame. One trick is to pull the grommet in more so you're partially flattening it's head before cutting it and this helps a little.

Aside from that be prepared to use sticky tape.

Paul
