Matthew, thanks for your comments. When I refer to strategy I'm thinking more about what you are trying to accomplish on the shot vs. playing strategy. For example, when she is fed shuttles that are near the net on the forehand side and told to clear them, I've never heard her coach tell her where she should be trying to have the shuttles land. On clears, I never hear her coach telling her to strike the shuttle at a higher point (she tends to let it drop lower than optimal). Perhaps I'm just expecting too much from a lesson for a 10 year old?

Perhaps I should have asked the group what they would expect a typical 30 minute lesson for a 10 year old to be like. I have no frame of reference and may just be unrealistic in expectations.

How long has your daughter been playing? Is she a beginner?

Now, without having viewed the coaching sessions, I am obviously not in prime position to comment! Normally, when a shot (i.e. a lift) is first introduced, SOME tactical stuff is covered. However, I would imagine that for a lift from the net, the only requirement (to begin with) would be to get the shot near the back tramlines, rather than worrying about WHERE along the back tramlines to aim – the tactical objective here is to move your opponent backwards, and create space at the front. It is sometimes the case that, after a few weeks/months, all of a sudden, the back box (in both tramlines) becomes a target – but this is only after initial practice has been done to achieve “at the back” – now you are getting it to the back and aiming straight for example. However, lifting to the back into a target area is something most players who have been playing recreationally for a few years would struggle with if asked to do it consistently! Not as easy as you might think. However, you could be exactly right that the coach hasn't gone over that stuff with her, or with the group. I don't know, because Im not there!

Also, is it private coaching? My initial reaction is that it is incredibly difficult to do anything in half an hour, especially if its a group session! You may have the additional advantage of seeing your daughter play more often, and hence spotting the msitakes! There is no shame in asking the coach what he thinks – asking if they think it is ok? Or whether it is not quite right e.g. the contact on those clears.

On the other hand however, perhaps your daughter uses a slight panhandle in her grip? And hence takes the shuttle lower on clears. This is not so easy to correct, as the entire confidence of the player is at stake – much better to change gradually over time than reduce them back to not being able to hit anything!

If you think you have spotted a mistake, then don't hesitate to approach that coach and ask!

It seems both the VT5 and VT7 are getting a facelift:

Still not what you'd call pretty, but definitely better looking than the current versions IMO (esp. the VT5). Might not be available in the UK for quite a while though…

Paul, I can view the link OK as well. What are internet explorer are you using (and are you using PC or phone?)? You might need to install a Chinese lanuage pack to get it to work as it is off the main Yonex website and not the UK version.

Thanks guys for helping me out. I’ve got the new images and will send to Yonex UK for verification.

Personally I like the black and yellow Voltric 5. I know many others who feel the same so it would be a shame to make them look too similar to VT80.

Speaking of VT80, I now have one in my bag although haven’t had much use of it except feeding by lifting to rear court. I could almost do that with a football boot.

I’ll think about getting a translation pack on my computer but haven’t a clue how.

Hi Paul, if you are using Internet Explorer, what you could try is clicking here www.yonex.com.tw/ and it should prompt you to install a language pack. You might need your system CD handy as some times asks for it?

See if that works anyway.

Just a tip: translating from a lot, to a lot of languages for free ? No install whatsoever ? http://translate.google.com/. Copy the text, paste the text, hit the translate button. Simple, easy, no install, no charge.

Cheers, ED
