Hi,
I have just joined the forum. I am returning to badminton after too long a lay off and really need to replace my sad old racquet. I would really like some help as it is such a long time since I bought a racquet. I live on a little island with no shops so I am going to have to buy without even having a hold and a swing. My current racquet is a Yonex Iso 30 VF. My son bought it for me to encourage me to start playing again. The sweet spot isn't very sweet and I don't feel like I have very much control with this racquet and in my rusty state, I am needing something to give me some more power. My wrists are no longer very strong or flexible so I am suspecting that I might need to go for a head light racquet but I'm not sure.
A bit about me and my game. I now play social badminton twice a week with just a few folk where I live. The standard is not good apart from one ex county player. I was a reasonable club player in the past and played county in my teens ( a vey long time ago).
I am naturally a mixed doubles player, preferring to attack and defend the net. As there are few strong males in the group where I play, I am having to learn a more of an all round game. My serve and net play are still ok, I am fairly nimble around the court (for my age!) and can stiill clear from the back though I feel that my current racquet means I have to put a lot more effort in this than I should have to. My back hand from the back stinks.
I have a budget of £80- £90. Does anyone have any recommendations. I am and always have been fond of Yonex but that may be more psychological than practical so I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks for your help,
CJ

Hey CJ
You should probably ask Paul about that, I would personally go for the Arcsaber 5, mainly because i use Yonex rackets. I know there are better arcsabers than number 5, and most of them have a lot of power. My friend just got an Arcsaber 10, i played against him with my old Slazenger SL 80 SGS. I noticed he had more power in his smashes and seemed to get his backhands clears almost to the back of the court. He won by only one point, must have been 30-29, which made me feel very disappointed. If he had used his older racket, i would probably have won. I had a feel of his arcsaber and you would probably need a thicker grip if you got one. By the looks of the way you play, i would recommend the arcsaber, but of course, thats from my perspective. You would have to test the racket yourself, ask a friend if you can borrow, or ask a store retailer. The only way really to decide what racket you want is to pick it up and have a few hits. If it feels right, you can buy it. But the decision is totally up to you. Remember to ask Paul.

Hi CJ,
Reading your initial post I would have suggested you actually look for a head heavy racket. You said that you could clear from the back but felt you were having to put too much effort in, a head heavy racket would give you more power and easier clears. The same should work for your smash.
I use a head light Nanospeed 4500 and rely on generating high racket head speed for power, generally speaking this requires a good 'snap' of the wrist. If you feel you have lost a bit of your flexibility in the wrist this may not come easily, you could feel you have even less power with a head light racket.
Paul has done some really good videos on wrist strength exercises that I would recommend to build your strength back up.
There are some good deals going round on old mid range Armortec rackets, or maybe the new Voltric 5 or 7 would fit nicely into your budget.
Good luck choosing, it really is tricky if you can't lay your hands on the rackets, but a decent Yonex should see you right.
