Hi there!!

I’ve being playing badminton for about 6 years; play about 5 to 6 hours a week.

For the last few years I have been using a Yonex Nanospeed 9900 (gone through about 3 of them in period of time) which I have found very good and has really suited my game. Unfortunately last week it broke, (clashed with another racket, broken frame) so now I'm searching for a replacement.

To my horror I see that Yonex are no longer manufacturing Nanospeed 9900 rackets!! Have tried a few web sites but, no good!!!! They do not list them any more L

Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and if you or Paul can suggest a new racket for me that would have the same characteristics as a Nanospeed 9900, stiff shaft and light head etc. I would like to stay with Yonex but not a must. I also know the racket is a little expensive but I don’t mind this as I get a lot of use and enjoyment out of it.

I have seen a lot of Paul’s racket reviews on line and he always says you should try out a racket on the court first before you purchase it. Unfortunately I don’t have that luxury has I live in a very rural area, (nearest main Yonex supplier would be inDublin). Any racket I get will have to be purchased on line!!!

Looking forward to your comments and suggestions

Thanks for your time!!!!

Aidan

This is really difficult. You are going to struggle finding any in UK.

The only place I know who are selling them is http://www.mybadmintonstore.com – based in Hong Kong. However, you have to consider customs charges may be applied before you can collect the parcel.

The closest racket I know of is Nanoray 800 and frankly, it's not close enough. There was a lot of hope that Nanoray Z Speed would be the next 9900 but that's way off the specification.

Thanks Paul for getting back to me so quick!!! Ill check out that website, might take my chances with the custom charges, really don’t want to spend weeks trying to get used to playing with a new racket type!!!

Thanks again!!!

The new NR900 might be worth a look. However, spec-wise it is ostensibly identical to the NR800…

There isn't really a head-light extra-stiff out there at the moment – even the blue Jetspeed is only a stiff. As Paul said, don't go near the NR-ZSP if you want a 9900-like racket.

Perhaps the Nanoray 900 will be a suitable replacement, however it isn't extra stiff.

It has a weird promotion. Yonex is selling the racket as if it will give you steeper angled smashes.

I saw the advert for Nanoray 900. I'm very disappointed in Yonex for not finding an equivalent for a top selling racket. I've said this so many times but Nanoray has not been a good successor to Nanospeed in my opinion.

I don't think Nanoray rackets are that light headed, perhaps because there's more mass on the frame. Yonex need to do something special with Nanoray series to get the players on their side. My instinct suggests they will release more 4U Nanorays in UK and Europe to combat the head light issue. They'll just make lighter rackets. However, it seems that as they make rackets lighter they could potentially be weaker and most of us consider badminton rackets break too easily in their current form.

Just thought I might put my few pennies here.

For retail, mybadmintonstore is famous for ripping off tourists. They charge close to a hundred bucks higher retail compared to most other stores for high quality rackets. If you really have no alternative, go ahead and get another, but I am sure there are other rackets. Okay, I've mentioned it somewhere before, but you could literally come over to HK during the holidays and the price of your racket retail is around $130 USD. besides, there's no tax and HK is extremely famous for a tourist location….

Replacement wise, like Paul said, I feel nanorays are inferior. No one ever uses them. Another option is flashboost which has like zero power. Well, screw yonex.

If you don't mind switching brands, I kind of like victor meteor MX 90 as a speedy racket, whilst providing a reasonable degree of power. It's not expensive too.

Hi Aidan, sorry to hear about your racket! Have you thought about having it repaired?

I can highly recommend this service, having played with a couple of repaired rackets you can barely notice the difference.
