Hi everyone,

I need some help picking strings. I am currently using BG65ti and I am thinking of a change. I need a string that is durable and gives control. I don’t want to have to keep getting my racket restrung every few weeks. A few friends recommended Ashaway ZyMax 65 and other have said BG80. If it is needed I play doubles, like to hit big smashes and I am starting to slice more so i would like control. I use a Li-ning Woods N80 and my tension is 25lbs but that is up for change if it is recommended.

Thanks for any help :)

Hey acejordo,

I want to know about more on strings as well. Intuitively, it seems like you’re asking for a lot. You want control, power and durability? Bg65Ti scores very well on both power and durability (although I do feel it kinda weak on control).

I may recommend the NBG95 which is an expensive string and is reasonably strong in everything.

Hi Alex,

I would rather have Durability and Control. I know I am not going to get everything :p Power isn’t important I can generate enough on my own. I would rather have decent durability and good control :)

This is an interesting debate.

I believe you get power and feel from strings – not control. This is as a direct result of the tension you choose and the skill you have with your racket.

The danger for you Acejordo is that you hit hard and want durability and control. This would suggest selecting a .73 gauge string rather than the .70 you are currently using. The difficulty with this is that the string may feel heavy, less powerful. But, you need to test and feel the string for yourself. The string I would suggest is Ashaway Rally 21 which from memory may be a touch thicker than this at around .75 but it’s been a very good string over the years and worth a test.

Your friends have also recommended AShaway Zymax 65 and Yonex BG80. By all means test them. However I fail to understand how a thin gauge string at .65 or BG80 at .68 is going to be more durable than BG65Ti. Again you need to test for yourself.

What you may find is that by testing a few strings you will find a string that plays great. However it may not be durable. You will then have to decide which is best…a string that plays great or a string that doesn’t play as well but lasts longer. Only YOU can be the judge.

Good luck

Paul

Thanks Paul,

I have ordered BG80, AShaway Zymax 65 and Nanogy 99. I don’t know if I should stay at 25lbs or change. Any opinions?

For stringing tension, I’ve heard of a general rule. If you cannot smash from the backcourt, do not surpass 22 lb. If you can do a decent smash from the back (some chance opponent can’t block), do not surpass 26 lb. If you can do booming jump smashes, string whatever you want.

Acejordo

Keep your tension at 25lbs until you’ve tested each string. You should only change one variable at a time otherwise you won’t know which is good or bad.

AlexLaw – I’ve not seen this quote before and don’t particularly agree with it although I can understand the logic behind it. The reality is very different because good smashes or booming smashes can be returned with a good defence. In some ways it’s not a bad rule of thumb but there are always exceptions. My fellow tester Mark is one of those players. He uses 31lbs tension and plays with plastic shuttles. That would kill my arm but doesn’t him at all. That’s the beauty of this game.

Okay maybe my words aren’t precise because I’m translating from another language. Perhaps ‘threat’ is the better word. If smashes will always get countered into a drive/knocked to the other corner with ease, then I define that as ‘cannot smash’.

Smashes can be blocked with good defence, but even in top level play a smash from the backcourt has a possible threat/chance of setting up a win/winning outright.

Hope that clears everything up.

I suppose Mark is so extreme he breaks all rules of badminton stringing. Well, he does have booming smashes, doesn’t he (reading from your reviews)? I did state players like him can string whatever he wants Cool.

At any rate, 25lbs seems good for the OP.
