I’m staggered by the number of players who’ve had problems with the Z Slash. At the same time, I do not see the logic of Yonex introducing a racquet that requires a smaller head. A conventional size head would probably not cause as many mis-hits.

AT900P is very good racquet. I estimate if has 12-18 months before it will be withdrawn by Yonex. It could be sooner if Lee Chong Wei decides to use the Voltric 80. This will certainly signal the end of the Armortec range.

You may find the AT900 P feels a bit “square” compared to VT80. This really is a beautiful racquet and I am so looking forward to reviewing it in the next two weeks.

I gave the Z a fighting chance.  I didn't really want to buy another racket for a while, but I was just having to work so hard with it, and when I needed it to be spot on, it just never was.

So I cleared up my VT80 misunderstanding.  Apparently the word “shipment” should have been replaced with “demo”.  As our “I am expecting a shipment on Monday…” conversation went at my local shop. lol.   So I grabbed a VT70 and a AT900P and bounced around the parking lot for a bit, rackets in hand.  When all was said and done I handed the stringer a VT70, I'm bummed, I want to hit with it now!  Per your review, it sounds like its going to be a good match for me.  And Yonex calling that racket a medium flex is a joke.

Thanks for your reviews and responses.

There is a fine line between medium flex and stiff. I'm not sure exactly what the difference is because some racquets designated stiff flex more than they should.

Perhaps there is a specific agreed measurement that designates the flexibility of the racquet – I just don't know what it is. However, I prefer to trust my instincts when choosing a racquet. Feel is what counts rather than specifics labelled by the manufacturer.

Good luck with your Voltric 70. I hope to join the Voltric club later this year when my contract is renewed. I'll be discussing that at All Englands tomorrow!

Terminology regarding rackets annoys me at times,   medium flex,  stiff,  extra stiff etc,    hardly quantifiable units of measurement from which an opinion can be based.

I'd equate it to fishing rods,  they all have a “flex”  but its measured in pounds,  i.e.  “2.5lb test curve” carp rod, this means the pound weight required to bend the flank of the rod to 90 degrees from the direction of the base. This way you can determine the stiffness of the rod for playing a fish and also casting etc. There are also other things to take into account but this is the main thing I can draw a comparison with when comparing rods to rackets and I feel its a more accurate way of determining things,  which bridges manufacturers etc and allows for fair and accurate comparisons.

Paul,  do you think the industry will ever standardise ?  and introduce a coherent unit of measurement by which we're able to accurately compare rackets ?   i.e.   at present stiff in yonex may mean medium in carlton  etc etc….   (just an example)

I’m not sure whether the respective manufacturers care enough to do something about it. I’m also not sure whether there is a perceived need to consider investigating this further.

Overall the best thing is to use your own judgement. After all, can we really rely on someone else’s opinion? I wouldn’t.

I like the idea of the idea wish the fishing rods. It would make racquet selectin a little easier if we had the same kind of system. At least this way we knew what to compare with if we fell out with a brand or just fancied testing a different brand.

Good thinking.

Really interesting point about stiffness guys.

I looked around quite a lot recently and found different places had different descriptions of the same rackets.

The z slash in particular has it's shaft described as Extra stiff, Stiff and medium-stiff depending where you look it up.

You may be onto something here, we could be the “bluetooth” of badminton !!!

So far so good with the VT 70, finally got to play with it today.  It took absolutely zero getting used to, weight feels like in in the right place, and it's a hard hitter wow.  Felt really quick and powerful, and something i was lacking in the Z, it was accurate.  It's not a piece of artillery like the AT700, but this is probably the most well rounded racket I've ever wrapped my fingers around.  Can't wait for tomorrow night at the rec.  Fun Fun Fun!!!
