Hello
I currently use a Winex Mighty Muscle 99 racket.
http://www.winexdirect.com/aca…..acket.html
I’ve had it since I started playing which is about 6 or 7 years ago. Initially I couldn’t get on with it and tried a Prince TT along the way which I used for a while – but I found that it was too light and returned to the Winex.
I play at various clubs as I travel with my job, and play regularly 2 or 3 times a week, mainly doubles – both mens and mixed. I’ve not really had any coaching along the way, and it’s very much a recreational thing i.e. I don’t play in any leagues or teams. I am quite big in build and a smidgeon short of 6′ tall. I play to a decent standard with a good range of shots. I like to hit high and deep to the corners and enjoy the shuttle hard and smashing.
I’d like to upgrade my racket, mainly because the Winex is getting a bit battered now. The choice is bewildering. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Ian
Difficult one to call really as Winex is not a well known brand. I’ve only come across it once in the last few months.
From reading your post, you seem to like a bit of weight in your racket. Not sure what your budget is, which makes any kind of recommendation pretty hard. But, I’ll have a stab at it.
As rackets are very personal, it’s usually best to try before you buy. This way, you’ve given the prospective replacement racket a good workout in the best conditions. But, it’s not always easy to do this.
For weighty rackets I’ve found Yonex AT900P and AT700 the best, but they are towards the top of the range with a price tag of £120 +. In fact, the Armortec range from Yonex is a pretty good place to start. Prices vary. The 70MG has been a very popular racket around £60.
Yonex do have some good Nano rackets around £40-50 which are also very good.
As i said, without knowing a budget i could go on and on. Either post again Ian or email me and I’ll do my best to answer your question.

Thanks Paul
Winex were positioned as a Yonex Clone.
I don’t really mind how much I spend as I play regularly, so whatever I get will be well used. I think that, being realistic, I’d rather stick to a mid range racket – up to maybe £120 max. It’ll be easier to re-sell if I don’t like it.
The Winex spec is
Winex Mighty Muscle 99
Style: Full Mighty Muscle
Frame
Construction: Ti Ultra Hi-Modulus Graphite
Shaft
Construction: Ti Ultra Hi-Modulus Graphite
Shaft
Length: Long
Weight: 3U (85-89g)
Balance:
Head Heavy
Flex: Stiff
String:
Ti-80 @ 22lb
Cover: Full Mighty Muscle Thermal Cover
Grip:
G3
So I’m thinking,
– Shaft length long
– Weigth 3U
– Balance, head heavy
– Flex Medium to Stiff; having read some of your articles I think I might benefit from that.
– Grip G3
The Prince came in as follows:
– Balance 29.5 mid point I think
– 79 grms
– I beefed up the grip slightly but still couldn’t get on with it.
Thanks for your help

Ian
Thanks for the extra information.
Just looked through the new Yonex catalogue to see if there is a racket to meet your requirements. Sadly no. There is only one racket at the moment with the slightly longer shaft and that’s the top of the range Z Slash, but it’s £30 outside your price range.
There’s a number of head heavy rackets, but they don’t have the extra ling shaft, just standard size. These are armortec 900 Power and 700, but they don’t have the flexible shaft.
I’m not familiar with other brands sufficiently to advise. Hopefully other forum members will chip in here.

Ian,
I played with 2 Yonex Isometric 800’s that I’ve owned for at least 15 years. They’re stiff, and heavy, a blast to smash with. I decided about a year ago to upgrade to another head heavy racket and bought myself a MusclePower 100. My point in telling you this is that the MusclePower is considered a head heavy racket, but compared to my Isometrics, it is very light overall.
I was concerned that my game would change, I go about 220lbs at 6′ so I’m a larger player as well. I can tell you the Muscle Power was an excellent choice for me. It definatley took a few nights to get used to the new weight, but once we got used to each other…
I’ve been auditioning various Yonex rackets the last few weeks, the AT900Power is an awesome feeling racket. I’ll bet you could find yourself a awesome racket within the Yonex Armortec line. (Yonex’s head heavy series)
There is a reason cloners chose to copy Yonex, they make excellent stuff. No need to flame me, I know there are some great clones out there. If you play 2 to 3 times a week then you deserve something nice, and if you find a little extra change in your pocket the day you buy a new racket, buy a Z-Slash, it’ll bring tears to your eyes!
Cheers,
Marc

One of the great things about this game is that there are so many choices for us players to make. Racquets are so personal and what suits one is the worst racquet in the world to another. Of course, budgets play a major part. Yonex is premier priced and therefore many players can purchase 2 racquets of another brand for one Yonex.
I’m a great Yonex fan and as most readers know, I’m sponsored by Yonex. However, i can still appreciate good quality racquets that don’t carry the YY brand.
Z Slash is a superb racquet, but after a huge amount of testing i settled for Arcsaber 8DX as my racquet for next season.
