I play lower division league badminton & have been looking for a racket that provides a good compromise between speed/responsiveness for net play in mixed doubles and power for clears/smashes in ladies doubles. After getting headache trying to read literature and specifications I tried one of Paul's demo sessions (a great way to choose a racket)

Of the rackets I tested I immediately rejected two:

  • Nanoray 80 – found it difficult to clear
  • Nanospeed 6600 – better than the Nanoray but still not great for clears/smashes – I don't think I'm a fan of head-light rackets

I had 3 possibles:

  • Arcsaber 003 – felt OK both at the back of the court and at the net
  • Voltric 5 – good head weight for clearing but still not too heavy to move around at the net
  • Voltric 7 – the one for me – slightly more effort required to clear compared to the VT5 but crisp and fast at the net

I also tried a Voltric 80 but, at my skill level, I couldn't detect any major benefit over the VT7 to justify the extra cost.

So I'm now the proud owner of a Voltric 7 and can't wait for club night to make use of it. Many thanks to Paul for the demo (and coaching tips)

What you discovered more than anything yesterday was how easy the process of a demo session allows you to find the right racquet for you.

By simply having the racquets by the side of the court and allowing you to switch between them means you can really feel the difference in each racquet. It’s also amazing how fast you can narrow down the choices because one racquet always feels much better than  another.

Then by removing the “rejects” you’re then selecting from a very small range. At the same time I’m feeding you so many shuttles for you to try out your shots and therefore select the best overall for you.

The process probably took 20 minutes. What was funny Jan when you decided to re-test your existing racquet. It lasted about 3 shots and you discarded it in favour of Voltric7.

Testing like this is ideal. It’s a shame there aren’t more retailers investing in future sales by having demo racquets, but that’s the way it is.

If you live around Manchester/Liverpool/Chester or within reasonable driving distance I’d be happy to set up a demo session with you. As Jan discovered, it’s worth the time.

For an added bonus, when you finished choosing your racquet, you get a free coaching time with me for the rest of the session.

Thank you Jan for the post and it was really good fun helping you choose a racquet and learn a little more about this great game.

Paul
