Hi, I am not really a beginner but this is a beginners question so I figured that I should post it here.
!
Basically, I have lost all form and knowledge. My game is a mess. At the moment I can’t seem to clear the shuttle to the back of the court. What’s wrong with me?!

What am I doing wrong? Is it arm muscle I am lacking? Wrist muscle? Both? Or is it technique? What should I concentrate on? I first thought maybe I was doing it in fear of hitting it out. But this theory got rubbished when I couldn’t do it now matter how hard I tried! Very frustrating! Sometimes, on the odd occasion, it goes flying out, but I have no idea what I did differently.

Help please! I am having a mid badminton crisis!

Hello Peter

I think the problem is with your technique as it doesnt require much power to do a clear.
You should learn the correct form for hitting a clear from a good player.
Check your shuttles because slow shuttles can definitely cause this problem.
Also a point to note is use a lower tension as you my not be hitting in the SWEET SPOT which is smaller when strings are strung tightly.

It sounds like timing or body position to me.

Look around for the correct way to have your body positioned and the technique for where to hit the shuttle.

A common thing I see a lot is people letting the shuttle drop too much meaning their arm isn't fully extended when they hit and losing masses of power.

I think you might have nailed it on the head with my arm not being fully extended. I haven’t been playing that well and have been very tired of late trying to do as much stuff as possible (gets difficult when you’ve got two kids! lol), so I am going to concentrate on that next week. I will let you know how I get on. Thanks for all these tips guys, it takes a few suggestions before you find the answer you are looking for 🙂

Peter
I did  say that second child would be more than double trouble!
I agree that there are a combination of factors going on here. You were certainly hitting very nicely when I last saw you on my residential weekend.
Tiredness plays havoc with everything from technique to the way you think. Have a week off, get some sleep (easier said than done) and just have a go at enjoying the game rather than being super critical.
You learnt a huge amount on my course and my guess is that you’ve been  a bit blinded by the amount of stuff to learn and master. So much so that you really haven’t decided where to start. As a result you may have been subconsciously tinkering and this, coupled with tiredness is resulting in this loss of form.

Hey Peter, suds to me like a mental issue to me. ive been going through the same myself with my serve, short and flick. I suggest u take the pressure off 1st and take a break from the game a week like paul said.

Then focus on the technique. U know how to do it. Go throught the steps slowly in your head. Try not to hit it hard, try and hit it correctly and take ur foot off the back of ur neck! Even picture in ur head clearing the shuttle to the back line right at the back of the court but dont do it yet. Take a break break 1st.

Sport is funny, sometimes when we want to improve so much, we put this pressure on ourselves and the pressure is so much that any mistake and we get angry at ourselves and frustrated which of course makes it worse. Always have fun when ur playing, training, practicing. Not to say u cant be serious at the same time but enjoy it. If anything, you could take the pressure off completely and say il go and play but jus to have fun for a couple weeks. All u worry about is having fun whether u play good or bad. Just ave fun. I had to do this myself and my game improved by leaps and bounds 🙂

Yeah, sounds like a classic case of trying too hard.

For whatever reason, you become preoccupied with trying to hit harder – you take a bigger swing; your muscles tense up; you grip the racket too tight; etc, which only makes things worse.  In badminton, power comes from being relaxed and hitting smoothly and cleanly – not from brute force or trying to consciously control every movement.

You just have to stop worrying about it, like GingerPhil says. Maybe take the opportunity to brush up on your net play, or go help out some beginners, or something – just to distract yourself for a while.

I think the question we al want to know now is How peter is getting on? Did you sort your clear out. Its been 6 weeks since your 1st post. Is your clear back to its normal best?

Hi, well there has been a reason for such a long delay in me relying, mainly because I have been injured. I hurt my wrist whilst building a trampoline for my kids and have just returned to my club tonight, hence why I waited till I played properly again before reporting back.

Well before I injured myself, I was using all your tips and ideas and found that they really helped. I think Paul was right, having more kids has killed me! Hehe.

Well, in the end, I went from one problem to the next, which was keep hitting my clears…….. OUT!

Then I got injured, and its been a niggling injury but one thing I have learned from my injury is that if you are unable to clear to the back of the court easily, then you are doomed! It is a shot that you NEED to be able to do. You can get away with out having a good smash or having good drop shot or net control, but if you can’t clear that shuttle then the shuttle will come back at you thick and fast!

I am now clearing OK, maybe still not as good as I’d like but that is due to my wrist still being slightly sore. So it’s onwards and upwards from here. If anyone else is having problems, read all the advice above.
