Hi Paul,
My 7 year old son just had his first badminton lesson at school last week. Just before his class, I trawled the net for help and ran into your exercise videos – and make him do the armchair exercises (from your videos 1&;2) each day (1 set of 10 for now). He is of slight built (built well I think for badminton). However, my concern as a mother is that once a week classes are not good enough! Is there anything else I can do – exercises, drills, anything for practice…to ensure he stays interested, and also develops strength, technique and flexibility? Have bought a basic local Cosco racket for now (he is not the most careful with his things!) – I would also be grateful for any advice on beginner rackets – is the Yonex Isometric Kid 45 any good?
Your advice is critical – since I only played badminton as a hobby, (played basketball) and am no good on technique! But, as a Mum, I really want to help!
Thanks in advance,
Indrani

Bearing in mind your child is only 7, which is the same age as my oldest son, I suggest the following…
Let them play and have fun!
At this age, aprt from learning how to hold the racket correctly, there is very little I would teach. Whilst I appreciate Chinese players may have a different view because of their system, I believe having fun on court is the most important aspect at this early age.
Then, teach skill through fun activities on court rather than specific training.
Paul
