Hi,

I like watching the youtube channel badminton.tv and listening to the commentators. Recently I have watched some badminton videos elsewhere and realized that the commentators are not only good; they are great. They seem to be ex pro players and their comments add so much to the watching experience.

Gillian Clark has commentated for like two decades? She’s won some golds in the less important ones, but she does have a few bronze medals in the big tourneys like the WC and the all Englands. Still definitely a very strong and probably the category of just under the top at her prime.

Morten Frost I believe is a newer addition to the commentary team. He’s won the world champs once (I think? don’t quote me on this), been in the top three for a long period of time. He’s definitely the more famous one.

Both are excellent commentators.

For clarity – Gill Clark was a top class womens doubles and mixed doubles player. She has done extremely well in commonwealth games (at least a silver if I recall…) and has been in the finals of the all england. I am sure she had many other wins as well, but those are the main ones I am aware of.

Morten frost has 2 world championship silver medals (no gold – beaten in both by chinese players) but has won many all england titles (5+ ? many consecutive finals) and won more than 50 other titles (most of them were grand prix – which were the equivalent of superseries). To be clear – 20 years ago and before, the All England was almost as prestigious as the world championships – so getting to the finals of that or winning it was a very big deal in the world of badminton.

I particularly enjoy listening to Morten Frost on his commentary of the top mens singles players. He has an excellent understanding of their strengths and limitations, and I think many players would benefit from his views.

The combination of Frost and Clark is very good. However Frost has recently accepted a post as head coach with Malaysian Badminton Association so it’s unclear whether he will be commentating much.

Gillian Clark has won so much in the game. She won a number of European titles (with different partners), numerous Commonwealth Gold medals, was runner up at All Englands with my old friend Chris Hunt and I also believe with Thomas kilstrom from Sweden, and has won numerous titles around the world. She really knows her badminton but rather than say all that needs saying, she generously allows her fellow commentator to say something good and then creates a conversation about it.

I haven’t heard the commentary from the NBL as I haven’t watched any games. I’m not in favour of this new scoring system and would rather watch the best in the world and learn rather than the best in England and hold my head in shame…at times.

thanks for your comments, as usually very informative and helpful.

I also like the fact that Forst and Clark are very fair in their comments. They don’t hide if they have a favorite player/pair in a match, but they don’t let it affect their comments on the other side.

Even the (male) person who commented before Frost, was very good (don’t know what happened to him). The current pair Clark and Frost, yep, I agree, top ! I watch quite a lot of games on the YouTube, and I must say the quality of couverage BWF gives in return simply drips from the screen. BBC level if I may say. They do a fantastic job promoting the sport in this way. They deserve all my credits. I’ve been to a few tournaments where (the) commentator(s) hardly knew anything about the sport (but he was famous as a football commentator …). Sad thing really.
Cheers, Ed
