Thank John & Matt, for your thoughts. Foot work I have to admit is not my strong point, & not giving it a higher enough priority is a big mistake. But an area I’m going to be putting to no1 on my list followed by racket preparation. Hoping to be buying some new court shoes soon, with really good cushioning, as painful heels & balls of feet, which will make foot work drills more enjoyable.
Matt did you do your footwork on court or could you do it in the garden? Plus what was you going to write about closing down angles & limiting the number of shots they can reply.
I know footwork & getting to the shots early. But I am interested in your thoughts.

I book a court for an hour early on sunday morning. I think i am a little too conscious to do it in the garden 😉
But seriously, doing it on court helps for so many reasons including simply building your court awareness. The surface in a garden is not something I want to ruin badminton shoes over. If its grass it can actually be quite slippery and dangerous, whilst if its concrete, it will devour your shoes! Having said that, there are lots of footwork movements you could do at home/in the garden, that are not full court movements. I would suggest though, that you purchase some rubber matting to use, to save your shoes and your joints!
I forgot I was going to say a bit more on that other post, I will do say today 🙂 Thanks for reminding me.

I would really love to have the time to book a court and have a decent workout with a practice partner. The benefit would be enormous. With all that happens in Stewart household, I barely get the time for any private coaching work never mind self improvement.
The other element of improvement that players tend to neglect is pure thinking and planning time. We can all be very good at instinctive responses to given events, but how often does a player reflect and consider in these given situations the alternatives and whether they would in fact produce a weaker return from their opponent?
I love the use of video and we have used it a lot at Lilleshall. Usually I use a video camera but lately I've been using my iphone and a couple of great apps either Coach's Eye or Ubersense. These apps allow me instant slow motion replay and also I can draw on the screen. They are better for capturing an individual with technique issues rather than a complete game. As the saying goes, “each tool has it's use.”
