I have been thinking lately of the merits of staying with a badminton club where your not good enough to play with the best players in the league & better then the intermediate players. Is it healthy for your badminton improvement to stay at the same club where you will probably yo yo with promotion & demotion? Would you improve more by going to a new club?
Or would it be better to stay at the club & play & wait your time & see if you can find a partner with the same ambition & potential to move up through the leagues?
How long would you stay if you didn’t get a partner or a chance to play in the higher leagues?
Would be interested in the forums thoughts & if anyone else is the same position?

Interesting situation. In a way, you can only beat what is in front of you. Same with improvement maybe? I guess you could practice things with the “weaker” players and be tested against the “top” players. However, depends on the person, as if you are kind of person that plays with “weaker” players and drops your game, then when you play the one good match, you are playing awful as you’ve been playing with the others. Missing your chance to properly test yourself against better players.

At the end of the day, it’s swings and roundabouts and it depends on your goals. And remember, it’s not always about how good players are, that get onto teams, it’s who you know. So even if “top top” player isn’t playing so well, they might just keep him in the team anyway, which means you wouldn’t get a look in. And if you want to another club, you wouldn’t be able to walk straight into a team as everyone has sort of set their place for the season. So you’d have to start from the bottom and work your way up. And the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

If I was you, I’d at least give it a few more weeks, as you could just be feeling down about it or had a bad club night (it happens to us all, it’s never perfect ALL the time). If, after so many weeks, the feeling is still strong then maybe it’s worth looking into? What would be the pro’s and con’s moving NOW, to moving in the summer? And remember, good players attract good players (I’m assuming that you are a good player, as most people downgrade how good they are so you are better than you think Wink). So if you stay and another good player joins, said person might stay. Whereas if you go they might think that there’s no middle level and leave.

I realise that I’m talking about club nights than match teams but I’m not sure on the setup of league teams for different places so I just thought that this post might get you thinking or give you some ideas. Laugh

As usual Dobbie you ask the greatest questions!

This is very subjective because you know the personalities. However, if you wish to improve you cannot play at a club that is happy to hold you back, or hasn’t the depth of players to support your ambition.

I know you have experienced various issues with your partner this year which has been extremely frustrating. So why stick around for more of the same next year.

Life is too short to settle for second best when you have the opportunity to stretch and develop as a player. Personally, if the chances of making the higher team are slim, then you need to find another club. If you are propping up the second team, without support then you need to find another club.

Since writing this article, I’ve been told that they have ear marked me to play up in division 3 for the rest of the season in the men’s C team, so as to freshen up their misfiring team. ( Perhaps they read the forum lol)But I’m going to monitor the situation at the beginning of the new season & make a decision depending on who I’m paired with & what team & the strength of the team.

Wow Dobbie. Playing in a league with C class guys? You must be one of the best girls in your previous club. That’s an excellent achievement. I’m forever a class D fool so from now on I’ll only read what the others comment.

If the men’s C captain saw me play last night I would be lucky to make team Z. The night before I was playing against better players & doing ok. Had an away match which we should of won & I started so poorly & lost all my games.

Everybody has an off night every once in a while. But if you are aspiring to get into a higher team you have to demonstrate a leadership quality to ensure you are leading the way.
