Hi

Im very new to this forum and i have a problem at my local club near my school.

I am a full out aggresive power player who is known to have a very strong smash (not that fast compared to you guys lol)

Now I have read Paul's article about Different playstyles and knowing by now I am a Agressive Attacker I have so much problems against a other player in my club who is based around singles his play style I can definitely read as a Agressive Thinker and loves to do deception and faints in his game which really bugs me, as I like my pace fast to medium, NEARLY EVERYONE in my club has beated him and even as i ask what they do to beat him it just never works. The games i get near to him is 21-19 21-17 so where nearly matched.

Now this I really want your help and feedback and tell me as you guys are probaly way more experienced then me and tell me what to do when in face with this type of player oh and btw i am 2nd or 3rd best in my for singles and 1st for my doubles pairing I eagerly wait for your replies and thank you for your contribution

Brandon 🙂

Bearing in mind the scores you are achieving, you are not far from getting the measure of this player.

Rather than jump in and not allow other forum members to answer, let's ask a few questions.

1) on average how many smashes do you hit into the net of out of the sides in a game? At which stage in the game (opening, middle, end) do most of these occur?

2) in which areas of the court does your opponent score more winners? By winners i mean shots you fail to return rather than simple mistakes.

3) in your matches, who is the dominant player at the net?

4) how many variations on a smash to you use in a game?

OK, I'll leave it with these questions and look forward to watching both yours and other forum members responses for now.

Paul

Hi paul

thanks for your reply 🙂

here's my response to your questions

1. I smash more into the net then into the sides about 3-4 times in 1 game as I am quite confident smashing down the lines when given the advantage, these would usually occur towards the middle-end of the game

2.My opponent makes most of his winners when he does a deceptive lift and drop shots that looks like hes going to atempt a smash (he is quite weak with power play and so uses his skill) other winners are when he is quite tactical and plays where I am open, my footwork is ok but he doesent see it as a weakness from me

3.when it comes to net play I use to be really bad and tend to avoid due to head heavy racket and bad techinique however now i feel very confident around the net especially the net kills and spin net shots to force lifts

4. I usually smash to the body or the front of the player, or the backhand most of these smashes are my favorite full arm jump smash which are like impossible to return from my club players, i do vary my smashes using my wrist and overhead smashes. i wouldnt usually smash crosscourt as for me they feel weaker unless the space or oportunity is given.

Thanks again for your reply as these questions really made me think about what i do in my games

From what you have written, I would say, the first rule in badminton is getting to the shot. Forget how good your shot or returns are, if you can’t get to the shuttle in time, you’ve lost. It sounds like you are watching the player and not watching the shuttle when he is doing a deceptive drop shot. I have been there and done that and the best way to get around this, even though it’s easier to say than do, is to watch the shuttle and not the player. This may take a little practise but works for me.

Also, it sounds like you smash too much or you empathise the smash too much. If someone was to smash to me, what would be the most annoying return I could do? Drop it back of course. Why? For a start, it breaks up the smashing as you can smash the return. If I cleared it high then I am giving you another go. Also, if I drop shot it back, you will have to run forward, creating space for me to put the shuttle. Yes, you could return my drop with a drop back, but the difference is that I have had more time to scan the court and think about my next move whilst you have be concentrating on getting to my drop shot. This all does happen very quickly and will depend on the player but this is the way I view it.

Also, if your club players are used to you smashing (learn to cross court smash, it can be a killer!), why not do a deceptive drop? You don’t have to get the deceptive bit spot on, you would be surprised what you can get away with. It’s mostly the player themselves that thinks “oh they will see that coming a mile off”, when the fact is, what you do is enough to throw them off.

There is probably more but I don’t have time at the minute to think of them and write them all down, forgive me! But I hope this helps in some way and gets you and other people thinking.

Thanks for your reply Pete maybe i will start to look foward to watching the shuttle and not the player in my next game against this person and other players

And yes it does seem that i really do talk about the smash or just epathise it too muchLaugh really i love the smash, but i have recently developed around the net. Im more of a momentum player who will play fast drives and quick drops and then when that slight chance comes i will counter it with a smashCool sorry for talking about my playstyle instead

Also it has been a while since ive played him in a proper singles match and building up all this confidence and help from you guys i think i might just be able to pull it off and finally beat my rival 🙂

Thank you everyone for your contribution!

I live in Nth Finchley and play in Cockfosters/Enfield so I know Barnet really well.

Is Nobby your coach ? I know he does some stuff at QE school amongst other places.

Enfield Drill Hall isn't that far from you, they have a couple of really good coaches that do some stuff there, might be worth looking into that.

Highgate might be a bit far but John and Leon have produced several county and at least one international player from their acadamy.

PM me some details of where you play and what competitions, I might be able to point you to some help.

You have a number of answers now. Take them away and work on your game. Then let us know the outcome of your training.
