Phil
It's great to hear from you. I have been watching events in your life unfold and I'm so pleased for you.
Having spent considerable time with you on court from you flying to England to attend my residential weekends, I am pleased that you've taken the pressure off yourself. This, combined with a happy personal life now seems to give you the balance to allow your talent on court to shine.
Paul
PS You still owe me a Chinese!

lol il def get you a chinese at some point Paul lol.
My love for the league badminton seems to have left me, weirdly thou I still like playing singles with my friend who is a bit above me.
For the summer, il keep to this once a week and enjoy playing with him. and start the season next year very timidly. Dont want to go back to hating the sport again. Its supposed to be fun and enjoyable.
Hope you last residential weekend was a big success. 🙂

Hi,
[sorry for (possibly) spamming Phil's topic]
I started to play badminton a bite late (when I was 35) in the university, played it for more than 3 years, then had a long break (~3 years). A year ago I started to play again, this time in a badminton club in Germany (in so-called Kreisliga, ie 2nd level from the bottom in german badminton system). I never had any professional training, whatever I learnt came from reading/watching/practicing myself. I enjoy the game very much, however I keep asking myself whether I still have a chance to be a better player. As I can see, almost players who are over 40 and are good only because they used to be very good when they were young, so now when they are not that fit as young people, their techniques and experience still count a lot.
So to put it short: does someone like me still have a chance to improve himself? Or is it too late?
Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony, fair enough you probably wont become international standard but anyone can improve at any age. If you are willing to learn, practice and play, you can improve.
Id highly recommend Pauls Coaching weekend. Its very good as Ive been to 3 or 4 of them so can testify this.

Tony, you'll be fine!!
Your game will get better as you are playing good people and this will make you better alone (generally speaking). So it's very possible to get to their level or beyond. The most important part here really, is are you enjoying it?
I play matches and everyone takes it fairly seriously but at the end of the day, we play in a very small league so even if I was the best player ever and helped the team win everything, I won't go any higher. I'm happy where I am, it suits me fine and there are some tough clubs to beat and some clubs that are beatable (still have to try though, they aren't “easy”). For me, my badminton setup suits my personal life well so I wouldn't care if some players may seem better or have been playing for many years at a high level so seem naturally good. The challenge of beating them is the same for everyone and there is no reason why anyone can't rise to it. The most important part is not to feel overwhelmed when you play them.
Back on topic a bit more (sorry, I drifted off topic there), it's never too late (as Phil said), and there are many things you can do to improve. What options you choose are up to you, but just make sure you are enjoying yourself and don't turn it into a negative obsession. And why not ask these players on how they think you could improve or how good you are, you might be surprised at their response! Good players like to be pushed, it's not always about the score line.

Tony
I've coached kids as young as 7 and recently had the pleasure of coaching a wonderful gentleman on my residential course who was 71. He learnt so much and sent me a fantastic email to tell me how much more he was enjoying his badminton.
I still learn from every session I run or watch.
So there's never a point where you can't improve, it's only whether you want to improve.

Hi,
thank you very much for your replies. I feel more motivated now, especially I am very glad to know I still have ~30 years to improve my game 🙂
Actually I enjoy the game very much, but sometime I am frustrated when I see myself making so many silly mistakes. Perhaps I should take it as a good sign that I see my mistakes and room for improvement.
I wish I could take Paul's Coaching weekend, however it's just a bit too complicated for me (I don't have german passport; I need visa to enter the UK).
