Could anyone give us some ideas on how to quickly unlearn bad habits?
Not an exclusive list, following are the bad habits I am having:
- slicing shuttles too much / racquet head is not facing the front when hitting shuttles, this has caused reduce power in my shots, especially when I try to high clear the shots to the back (my solution at the moment is to hit attacking clears, but unfortunately, my opponents cut off shots most of the time.
- my swing is too large and therefore, racquet head speed is very slow
- holding racquet too tight (how should I relax while I am not hitting and only grip it when I hit it?)
Any suggestion you can provide would be most helpful.

Let’s try and tackle the issues one at a time. First of all you need to accept that learning to change is going to make you feel uncomfortable. Why? Simply because the way you play now feels normal. So you need to feel the opposite to know you are on the right path. Whenever you’re on court, having this feeling means you are making changes. Then you need to repeat so many times in order to feel comfortable again.
First of all, check your grip. Are you sure it’s right? It’s hard to slice a forehand shot if you have the correct grip. Test and re-check your grip after every shot. Look at my armchair exercises and the video on grip changes will really help. 5 minutes a day will make a considerable difference.
You can walk around you house barely holding your racquet, but maintain correct grip. Every minute or so squeeze your grip and then relax – there, you’ve just played a shot. See how loose you can hold the racquet without it falling out of your hand.
With regard to your hitting techniques, please send me a video of you both hitting shuttles (clears, smashes or drops) and I’ll do my best to identify what’s not happening correctly and suggest ways to improve it.

Thanks so much Paul. Will have a look at home and if nothing available, will tape some this weekend when Andrew and I playing at Corporate Games in Melbourne (not together, because he thinks that I would have reduced his chance of winning doubles – all the doubles are mixed together, so we won't really have a chance to play against two guys)
