How would you classify badminton elements?

Dear all,

I wonder if you can provide some inputs on how to classify badminton elements? My goal is to build a webpage which is similar to the table of contents of  badminton elements, however each element can have some “attributes” (don't know a better term) to help the reader get oriented and not overwhelmed by the large number of items.

My first attempt can be seen here (article names taken from badmintonbiblle.com):

 Image Enlarger

This diagram is a very rough and incomplete draft; my intent is to use color, font, layout etc. to show various attributes of an element. At the moment I have for each element the following attributes:

– name + short description (shown as tooltips). Shown as text.

– group: footwork / grips / serves / net shots / etc. Shown as columns.

– level: fundamental / essentials / advanced. Showns as colors.

– dependency (not shown in the diagram yet): an arrow connecting the elements to show dependency between them. Example: low backhand serve has a dependency on thumb grip.

The final version of the diagram would be a webpage, clicking on an element will open a page containing relevant links about that very element. For example, links to this forum, badmintonbible.com, or videos on YouTube.

Of course too much information is not good for everyone. So my plan is to make the diagram as complete as possible, then generate simplified versions from that master diagram. The reader can choose which one to see.

Looking forward your comments.

Tony

Hi Tony, I don't have anything to add I'm afraid but just wanted to say that I think that this is a very good idea! A lot of work and planning needed but I can see your goal and it's a good way (and different) of helping people choose what to learn next (and what's more important as a beginner).

Having to try and write a simple guide to badminton (this one), many moons ago, I know it takes a while to get all the information in and for it to look right. I never did fully complete the guide to how I wanted it to be (life took over! Laugh).

Looking forward to the end result, and I think a lot of people would be interested in looking at this once completed, from beginner to advanced, so keep up the good work.

Looks good already Cool

Peter,

many thanks for your kind words; I feel much more motivated after reading them.

I read you guide sometime ago and found it very useful: compact, right to the point with relevant information not only for beginners.

I am still looking for a way to make use of the “row” concept in the diagram; at the moment it's unused, which is sub-optimal. So if we can come up with a mapping “row” <==> “some attribute”, then it could be more useful.

I am thinking of the attribute “importance”, but it's shadowed with “level” and could add more confusion instead of help.

Tony

I am sure many forum members including me would welcome information on badminton so if you do create something I am happy for you to test it on this forum to gain feedback. We will be your beta testers.
