Peripheral Vision

I was wondering if there is a good way to train peripheral vision for badminton? I often get in to position to take an overhead shot but then find it difficult to see the court and opponents as well as hitting the shuttle. I often struggle to pick out space or specific target areas, see the opponents changing position and suchlike. Any tips would be appreciated Laugh

One of the best ways to train to improve your peripheral vision is to train your feet to move faster. Whilst it may sound a silly answer, there is method here to consider.

First of all, most players do not have good peropheral vision because they are hitting the shuttle when it's already behind them. This means the head is in the wrong place for you to look at your opponent and size up the shot to play.

The other thing to consider is your actual movement and where your head is when you move. Take a look at my video on moving backwards in balance and this may help a little.

Good luck

Paul

I do some drills with my kids that seems to help them.

One person plays a clear every shot and the other person smashes, doesn't have to be a full smash or clear as originally I did it to teach them direction and technique rather than power.

After clearing you hold your racket to one side and they have to smash in the racket direction.

It's had a great side effect of them using their peripheral vision without consciously thinking about it, it really helps their body/head position without them knowing they're being taught it too.

I don't know if it only helps with beginners but getting them to concentrate on certain drills that forces them to do stuff they don't realise they are doing has brought them on leaps and bounds.

I don't know if this will help as it's only an opinion but worth a go as I could swear it worked for me.

A long long time ago, BC (before children), I used to play Sight Training on the Nintendo DS which supposedly helps your peripheral vision. When I had the time, I would quickly play this before badminton and I could swear that I was more aware where my opponents were one the court. You could argue that this could just all be in my head, but I have to say it was a good game to play and I did get better the more I played it (over time, it's a quick pick me up type game). It's worth a go and you could even put it down next to Paul's armchair exercises.

Haven't played it in years, in fact, I haven't seen the Nintendo DS in years! Doesn't matter though as I don't get the time any more but I thought I would just mention it.

If you do try it, let us know how you got on and whether I may or may not have a point.

Thanks for all the advice, everything you have all said is very helpful. I think I am hitting the shuttle when it is too far back as Paul mentioned so my head is looking more upwards than forwards. I like the sound of the drills Simon that is something I will try. I don't have a DS Pete but if I come across one (I am sure someone I know must have one knocking arouund) I will try that sight game and let you know if it works for me as well Laugh
