This is a great thread.
We all wish that we had a magic “In The Zone” pill that we could pop every time we stepped on court.
All the coaches on this forum know that it is akin to finding the holly grail to get players performing consistently and to their optimum.
Professionals have the backing of performance coaches and sports psychologists to ensure the best mental and physical preparation for every match. For us mortals there are ways to prepare for games and some good ones have been discussed above.Something that I find helpful is breathing control, particularly when serving.
This link, hope it works, gives more information on breathing and mental preparation in a sporting context. http://www.pponline.co.uk/ency…..-you-31994

Thanks for your comments and the link Roger.
Top athletes know how important this is. One of the first to understand it, write about and then then study it in more detail was Britains Olympic 400m hurdler David Emery. He was a medalist in early 1970's. Fascinating topic and one that doesn't receive enough mention.
Personal Coach Tony Robbins (one of my trainers), talks about his time with tennis star Andre Agassi. Tony began working with Agassi when his form had slipped and he'd not only lost his world number one ranking, but had slipped out of the world top 50. He talks about helping the player understand his peak state and taught him how to get into this state at will when walking onto court. After working with Robbins, Agassi regained his world numer one crown and won a number of tournaments on the way.
This is a subject that can be taught but it is about understanding how you see, feel etc when you are in peak state. This is a brain re-wiring process that can be repeated but needs to create specific anchors to your past to ensure you have the tools to bring them into your future.

Can I say that Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir were playing in the zone, judging from their performance during the AE finals demolishing their Chinese pair rival?
Likewise, consider Wang Shixian’s bouncing back strongly after a change in China Team coaching personnels (Chen Jin now heads the women singles). Her court coverage against Li Xuerui’s attack-minded play was awesome…
OTOH, isn’t possible that a player can get out of the zone during a game?
What is the most likely cause of this slip? Panic?
