The issue here is the size bag you can take on a plane rather than what's in them. Bear in mind and excuse the flippancy but I don't know of an airline that has reported a hijacking whereby a badminton racquet was used as the weapon of choice.

I think you will be asked to place racquets in the cargo area rather than on the plane so would suggest you pack you bag on this basis. Personally, i would place clothing either side of my racquets to provide as much cushioning as possible. i would also tape my racquets together whilst still in their individual bags to ensure they remain together and therefore will create a stronger package.

Pauls's right, it's about dimensions and weight, not content.

I know some airlines offer a service, i think it's called priority cargo or something, whereby you can put specialised items in a sfaer hold.

I know people that have used it for musical instruments and golf clubs but I don't know the details.

I think badminton bags are made with hand luggage specs in mind so for £20 or so a 3-racket-bag might be useful

Don't ask us, ask the people who run the airline. Give them the dimensions of the bag when full and check with their regulations regarding the size bags you can take on the plane.
