I went to badminton central and saw a post on footwork. It had a range of posts on serving with your racket – foot forward or vice versa. I’m confused, does it matter which foot that you begin you serve with?

Watching lin dan and lee chong wei play they both serve with their racket foot forward.

Does it matter?

you should find by yourself what is your method of serving, i serve in singles with racket foot forward but in doubles both lags in same line.

I’ve seen this question on Badminton Central too.

I’ve just recorded a video on serving which will form part of my bonus video to be released in about a month.

To me it doesn’t matter which foot you have forward to serve. What matters is that you can move quickly once you have served and most important, it’s what your racket does that determines how good your serve is.

What you have to consider is the return. In singles there are no half court pushes to cover, the shuttle is on the back line or near the net. If you can cover these areas quickly by serving with your feet together as an example, then why would it matter how you stood?

If however, you could not cover the corners and your serve was poor, then I’d be asking you to try numerous variations in style and stance to find something that does work for you.
