Hi Paul,
I’m sending this personally, ’cause I’m not sure it fits the context of you site (I kind of censure myself). Here I go:
you won’t here me nagging soon nor much about players, and one is better than the other, I think they’re all great sportsmen and women. But I think I can see an evolution in the double (and mix) serve on big tournaments. Take for example the Dane Boe, arround the net (the www I mean) you’ll see a lot of posts everybody thinks he serves way too high (instead of arround the waste, it’s arround his chin), even some comentators mention it. And yet, no service judge (or opponent) makes any remark about this. Serena Williams is playing tennis, so the judges shouldn’t fear for their lives if they make a remark. I mention Boe, because he’s really the uncrowned king in this “discipline”. But there are others as well, like the classic double stroke of Lin Dan. He still is a fantastic player, but his serve is not according the rules. The last one complaining about this must have been Lee Hyun Il in the Koreao open of (I think) 2008. And still the judge had no problem with that (watch the match on youtube). Paaske (who won the MD in the AE), has a very good, but “legal” serve, how come no couch sees this, or works on it ? If I, being an amateur compared to these guy’s, can see it, if comentators see it, how come their coach cannot see it ?
You mentioned somewhere some players really took their time before serving on the AE 100, and no judge replied on that (I think it was Robinson ?). What’s your oppinion about lakking the rules ? And judges lakking them as well, which is even worse !
Thanks
Ed
PS 1: I really hope you’re so wrong about Taufik (), I’m going to the WC in Paris, and so I really hope to see this guy in live action instead of on the youtube ! Fantastic match.
PS 2: feel free to copy and past on your blog anyway, I you feel this has additional and informational value for others too.

Hi ED
You’ve raised a number of good points.
In the commentary for All Englands, Gill Clark makes a number of good points about Paaske’s serve and how good it is. She also says that the strength in this combination stems from this serve and Paaske’s abilities at the net. He doesn’t have a huge smash, but he’s one of the most deadly players from the net. And yet, most players miss it because he doesn’t have the exciting big smash. Shame really. I’m going to write an article on it soon.
I too think Boe’s serve needs scrutiny as it looks high to me.
With regard to Lin Dan’s serve, that’s a tough one. You see he consistently has this double action and therefore there is no deception and no advantage as opponents know how he serves. And this is the grey area. Whilst if you take the law as it stands I believe he is fault serving, he gets away with it because of the consistency. There is no attempt to deceive, otherwise he would be stopped by the service judge. Whilst I still believe it’s a fault and should have been stopped, we are not going to change it now.
I think you’ve raised such good points I may copy your post and put it on the forum.
Thanks again for your insights.
Paul

Ah, so it still has to be Shuttle struck below waist, I think there are quite a few offenders at my club then!
I will see if I can find a copy of the rule book, trying to get an up todate copy is not easy in my past experiance

Peter
The difficulty here is establishing where the waist is. It seems that they can’t agree at international level so what chance do we have. Some would say your waist is where the top of your shorts is. But, for a lot of players this would mean the waist is at your hips. Some would say, it’s just below your bottom rib. Erm, how far below is that?
Looking forward to seeing your video soon.
