This is a little thing I came across about a month ago and it’s working wonders for me and my team.
It all started at a session which was a bit of a cool down after a busy few weeks of matches. Somehow we got into trying to hit the tape and tumble it just over the net, the “good fortune” shot that top players apparently aim for.
So I began trying to hit my shots where I thought they would be just below the tape, because I knew some of my shots weren’t quite that well-angled.
But something quite magical happened, rather than hit the tape, the shots became really really close the tape, but about a few centimetres away.
I asked my team-mates to try this out and ran some drills with it, and it worked for almost all of us.
I think it’s possible after a long amount of time, for our spacial awareness of where the shuttle will pass the net to sway a little so that we end up playing shots too safe. Can some of you who perhaps struggle creating these angles try this out and give some feedback on your results?
I know it worked wonders for my game and has improved my team’s performance tenfold.

Jordan
This is exactly what players should be doing.
Sorry to say, not many players practice the right things enough. They seem to think having a game is practice. It’s a shame because skills are not learnt in games, they are learn in practice sessions that can be tested in games. This allows the player to develop the newly learnt shot under game conditions without the additional pressure of the result having a meaning.
As you can appreciate, ultimately this results in new skills being used in match/tournament conditions which helps the player take a step towards the next level in their development.
Jordan, keep your insightful comments coming because the reason why this forum exists.

Hey Jordan,
I find your comment on changing spatial awareness very intriguing! I’ve noticed myself that my shots seems to increase in safety (away from the net) and will definitely give this a try next time. I think it’s possible that the body and mind might unconsciously adjust one’s own margin of error to decrease the risk taken with “risky” shots.
