I come from a tennis background having played tennis for 50 years plus. In tennis the tendency in league matches throughout the UK is to play doubles and only in certain competitions singles. I notice the same trend in badminton, where doubles predominates.
I personally prefer singles in both sports however I think the culture in the UK goes for greater participation in these sports rather than bringing up the level of overall singles play. Singles and doubles should be almost considered as different games even though they are played on the same courts using the same techniques
What are other people’s experience of this,

Doubles is preferred all around the world for a sport that is cheap, not too physical and social.
With singles you lose all three key aspects, which makes the game not attractive for a social player. Well, I can’t represent everyone, but that’s how I feel when I play singles compared to doubles. It also comes without saying I’m absolutely horrible at singles.

Yeah you can call them different games, the style of playing is quite different when players start to be fairly strong. However, at social levels, I see it being fairly similar, except the running portion is lower.
