I am making this thread to stop the “nerves : how to deal with them thread” bering hijacked by people talking about a point raised in there.

To give some background, Paul originally said on the subject of nerves:

Guys, my goodness I could write so much on this subject!

A few years ago I was studying psychology a lot, especially certain traits in sport.

To be honest, I don't have the time to write so much at the moment because of other commitments. However, I've had a thought and maybe this will suit everyone…

How about we hook up on a webinar/teleconference purely based on badminton coaching? This could actually be the first in the world! I certainly don't know of any other that has taken place?

With my limited time can somebody raise a new topic (Matthew maybe?) and collate the best times where we can all get online or on a telephone/skype and have a few hours discussion?

From my perspective I really don't know whether it would work but it's worth a consideration. We could then collate the questions, ask them live and we answer. I'd ask the coaches amongst us to go online through me so that you are given a different line so that you could join in more.

Guys, the technology is out there as I've been using it as a participant with calls to USA.

Have a think and let me know.

Here are the various replies in order.

Simon:

I'm not that sure how they work but there's a few free multi-chat things out there.

I'm not keen on that sort of thing usually but it sounds like a really good idea.

I reckon the younger guys will have better recommendations of the chat systems, my kids explained it to me but I wasnt that interested at the time and didn't pay much attention.

Ed:

My experience with webinars is so and so. They are usually continent based (because of the different timezones), and well planned (for the same reason). But mine all have commercial goals, this one hasn't. Since this forum is crowed with people from all over the world (which is fantastic), this might be rather difficult to do (early in the morning in America, noon in Europe and evening for the Aussy's). But this shouldn't stop us from pushing boundaries. I think good moderation is the key to a succesful webinar/conference call.

Conference calls with people with different language backgrounds are rather risky, written text is always more clear because you can read the participants post several times if it shouldn't be clear from the first time. Not everybody on this globe masters the English language at a “Shakespearian” level Smile.

All the best, ED

Paul:

OK, so why don't we consider doing two webinars – one for European participants and one for rest of world.

It may be that each event is smaller, however it then makes the availability that much easier.

Ray:

I am all for text-based seminars for the reasons Ed mentioned above. Besides, the broadband speed where I am at is generally low, so something like Skype (or anything with video) will probably be out of the question.

Let the discussion continue in this thread.

Just one, and then I'll wait for the webinar to take place.

1) Don't get me wrong, I still thinks it's a great idea.

2) Only gave a few considerations to think about (practical things one wouldn't immediately think of).

3) Post the agenda about the contents of the webinar, so participants know what the subject(s) will be on beforehand. It is up to the moderator to watch the sidelines, so the discussion doesn't drift away from the subject.

4) Indeed, this could be the very first in the world. Brilliant thought !

But I'm pretty sure you guys will handle this on the same level as this forum: professionally !

Cheers, ED

I've no problem posting the agenda of the confierence  – it's a good idea. It'll probably work better to keep the discussion to a few topics.

What we'll look into is you being able to type questions which I'll answer live or be able to ask me a question live on the night.

So, apart from the dicussion on nerves and ways to combat them, what else would you like me to talk about?

Over to you.

Paul

Well I did a bit of searching, so I didn't bring on topics that were already handled in the forum or by video. The things I did since this forum started:

Home : armchair exercises (but have to pick them up again), some rope skipping, pushups and situps

Outdoors : going to the gym (just to fill up the gaps in the competition calendar)

On court : paid attention to my footwork, some of my strokes, general singles play, in MD and XD sticked a bit to the partners I was used to play with, my netplay (“the one who controls the net…” keeps running through my head)

What I would very much like to improove:

1) my NEVRES are killing me in competiton and tournaments (at school I didn't have this much nerves, 20 odd years ago)

2) what sometimes kills me in singles: when my smashes are returned with a lob to the rear court. When I smash I tend to do the scissor kick (I belive it is called), so when comming down, I do a step towards my central court position. When my opponent hits the shuttles, I do a split step. But when I smash and the shuttle returns, I have no time for this split step. But by now I'm used to that, so I do it unconscius. That makes me too late to get back in time to the rear court to hit a proper stroke. So that leaves only time for some kind of emergency stroke. You can guess the rest.

A thing that is hard to learn, and I guess can only come with years of playing, is game overview. Don't get yourself into trouble. But right now I'm still to busy with all the things mentioned above, that there's no room left in my head for game overview. But if there are any tips, they are welcome.

Cheers, ED

Paul, it looks rather quiet on this topic. Don't know what your plan is, but I'm very curious on what you have to say about nerves and how to deal with them.

Thanks in advance, ED
