Marc1313, that is a very interesting perspective to have!

It intrigues me, because my views on that matchup are slightly different! I will watch again and consider what you have said. To my mind, Lin Dan, although using deception every now and then to try and disrupt Lee Chong Wei, I feel ultimately is making use of the most basic shots, but performing them to a high standard and trying to deprive Lee Chong Wei of time, but building vast pressure with unfaltering simplicity. He seems to me, to play with the intension of getting there fast, and playing simple shots quickly. His speed onto the shuttle means lee chong wei has to “be careful” of the threats from lin dan who is giving himself options by taking the shuttle early, whilst lin dans “identical” shot preparation is an excellent form of deception in itself. However, I personally would not class Lin Dan as a deceptive player, because I feel his game plan is not centred around this, unlike a player such as Pullela Gopichand mentioned earlier, who seems to play with sole intention to confuse and fool his opponent.

Interesting, that watching the final of the All England between Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan this year, I actually felt that LCW is moving BETTER now, than he used to, which is saying an awful lot I know – this seems to me to reinforce what I was trying to hint at earlier – Lee Chong Wei has actually improved his court coverage (and obviously his tactics, shot production and everything else) in order to become at ease on court, even against the great Lin Dan. Although Lin Dan was fantastic, he didn't look, to me, truly as if he were comfortable/playing the type of game that he wanted to be playing. Lee Chong Wei on the other hand, seemed at ease, comfortable with the pace on court, and in control of the tempo of most of the rallies. It was probably the most exceptional match I have watched, and I feel truly privileged to have witnessed that particular match.

I do so love this sport! There are so many intricate things that make it what it is, and everyone sees different ones!

The identical shot preparation is the deception that i'm refering to.  He can topspin/ hold the shuttle with the best, but to me it's the fact that most of his shots are identical.  I imagine that his legacy has an affect on players, but most of his opponents appear slow and a step behind.  That tells me that tells me his opponents have no idea whats coming.

And I'm with ya, Badminton is an incredible game!!!

BTW- Congrats to LCW, just watched the final.  Matthew, you're right, almost looked like they changed roles.  LCW in the driver seat and Lin Dan trying to keep up!

Cheers

What I would say marc, is that every player has this identical shot production. Although it is deceptive, it is a type of deception that makes players unable to guess where the shot will go next. However, a truly deceptive player, lik pullela gopichand, intentionally deceived players as to where the shuttle was going. He had the same identical shot production as most professionals, BUT he attempted on most shots to fool his opponents into believeing it will be a different shot than the one actually player, for example overly turning the body like he has been doing on all his cross court drop shots, only this time to play the shuttle straight. When you watch him, there are times you genuinely believe he is playing a shot to the left, and it goes to the right instead (and vice versa). I see this as different to what we observe in lin dans deception. Would you agree?

Watch the rally starting at 7.45. In my opinion, the winning shot of this rally, seen from a fantastic camera angle, is one of the greatest deceptive shots I have ever seen.

Matthew

It’s a great example from a superb match.

If you watch Gade, in those days his grips were slightly thinner. I think he hits the shuttle better then compared to current day.

I definatley agree with you definatley a differnet look than Lin Dan.  I'd like to watch some more of his play.

Looks like I need to travel deeper into youtube.  That was a great match.  Amazing the influence, that holding the shuttle just a millisecond longer has.

In that case, I'll add one: http://www.youtube.com/user/cu…..yenigmatik

This person added an entire history of awesome badminton matches on youtube. Not sure if all he/she ever uploaded is still there. But he/she stopped for some reason a while ago. Plus the loads of other posted matches on the tube. I hope your downloadlimit is not thight Laugh.

If you live in a country where badminton is concidered  as something weird, then you fast know your way where to find the things you need. I have to watch all big tournaments on YouTube, there's no other way for me.

Have fun ! Cheers ED

PS Fully agree on LCW's victory, he was definitely in charge the whole game through. LD was out of his comfort zone. Awesome !
