Hi, a few times of late when playing I run out of ideas as what to do with the shuttle? The shuttle arrives then you get caught (especially when playing better players) Not sure if it’s a combination of tiredness after a hard season & becoming stale. Has anyone else come across this. Look forward to hearing your thoughts

Hi Matt, thank for your reply. Having written my question, I have given it a lot of thought & believe after a long hard season with two bad performing sides & Niggling injuries led to a loss of confidence & added stress, trying to hard which left me feeling brain dead especially when playing against better players. I’d be playing getting to a situation & just didn’t know what to do for the best. Maybe thinking too much & thinking about too many shots.
But when I played up found it easier & played better. So think it was a mental block & became disillusioned with my partners.

Hi Darren
I this this a lot when players are up against good defences. They run out of ideas. I agree with Matt. Introduce a fast drop shot, vary the pace, angle, line of the smash. try smashing long rather than down. Expect your opponent will still retrieve the shuttle but occasionally you catch them by surprise.

Hi, Dobbie.
If you mean you need ideas when hitting overhead shots, the previous contributors are right. Stay on the attack, hitting fast drops, especially to the middle. This will eventually force your opponents into making a mistake. You can also smash to the middle which, again, causes confusion as the opponents won’t always be able to decide who should return the shot. By hitting these ‘stock shots’ you reduce the chances of making a mistake and keep yourself on the attack.
Hitting to the middle works in doubles because:
– It causes confusion
– You (hopefully) won’t hit out the side
– It doesn’t give the opponents any big angles to work
– The net is marginally lower, so there’s less chance of hitting the tape
I hope this helps.
Alan
